Good Evening,

I have just purchased the BCD-996XT and I was wondering which programming software is the best, ie: ease in use etc. I appreciate any insight any of you have.

Thank You

FREEScan

Freescan is what I use for my BCD396xt which is similar to your scanner.

Downloads - Sixspot Software

What's up Chuck?

I agree. There's still a learning curve with the scanner programming, but Freescan makes it more visual and easy to modify. You may want to ask whether someone in your area has a working Freescan file you can use to get started.

Give it time! It was days before I had anything at all coming out the speaker, but it's a great product.

Chuck, if you're having trouble compiling a file for your area, PM me with your location. I have freescan for my scanner and could probably help you out.

Chuck - these articles will help you understand your 996XT. Anything blue is a link of some kind.

Program your DMA Scanner - The RadioReference Wiki

No matter what software you use, you really need to understand these concepts before you attempt to program. Don't try to use the Uniden manuals - go to the bottom of the above article and download the Easier to Read manual.

As for FreeScan, we have it's user guide in our wiki here...

FreeScan User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki

As it's freeware, you don't lose anything if you decide to go to ProScan or ARC-XT later...HTH...Mike

Great thread. I too just bought a BCD996XT and had the same question. If any of you have an update on your recommendation (since this is dated 2012) I would appreciate a new post.

FYI: I'm new to forums and the first scanner I owned had to have crystals put it to receive the frequency. There was only VHF Hi and Lo. You had to buy the crystals and install them yourself. Be gentle!

There aren't any changes. The big 3 remain - FreeScan, ProScan and ARC-XT (in no particular order). But like I said in message 5 of this thread, you need to sit down and learn how to work with DMA before you program anything.

My advice is simple - use the links in that message and start reading. Once you have settled on the software and gotten a USB-serial cable working, go to the Virginia forum and ask for a file. Work with 1 or 2 systems at a time - learn how the different kinds of quick keys work. Don't try to do everything at once - it's easy to become overwhelmed with all the different options and things you can do
