New York Times article points accusing finger at Kerr County radio system

"After a deadly flash flood swept through Kerr County in central Texas this summer, rescuers combed dozens of miles along the Guadalupe River, looking for survivors. The grueling job was made more difficult because the radio system they needed to coordinate the response was not up to the task...

SDS150: New Uniden Scanner announcement at SEMA 2025

Yes, they did. I'd write that statement off as marketing hyperbole.

    2 meters

When DMR started rolling out in amateur radio, one of the "selling points" was that one time slot would be used for linked talkgroups while the other slot would be reserved for local traffic. That seemed like an ideal concept. But, repeater operators didn't stick with that concept and started...

Baofeng My thoughts on Baofeng radios

Based on the "tests" I see online, the quality has improved in some isolated cases. However, the quality is not consistent. Some are good; some are not good. I used to test handheld radios at hamfests using the same procedures and equipment that the ARRL Labs used. I encountered enough hams who...

SDS150: New Uniden Scanner announcement at SEMA 2025

Folks, let's use this thread to talk about this new scanner, it's features, and it's possible release date. Posts along the lines of "everything's encrypted", "nothing to listen to", or "you can still use this to listen to other stuff" do not contribute to the thread and will be deleted.

Clinton County, IN EMS New Patient Communications Technology

Nothing. While I suspect that it uses wireless communications, its not something that most scanners can monitor. Thread locked.

    Amateur Repeater Directory

This is a double-edged sword which must be handled carefully. 1. There are times when a repeater operator absolutely does not want their repeater listed in public databases. Reputable repeater coordinators honor these requests by flagging the coordination with a "do not publish" designation...

    Help Pass The HOA Legislation

I've edited the original post. 1. The OP appeared to be a cut-and-paste of links that appeared on YouTube. As such, the links were being redirected through YT, possibly so the YT creator would get credit for the link-through. There's no need for the YouTube connection as you can go directly to...

    Amateur Repeater Directory

There was a time when over 50% of the listings for my county on a well-known online amateur radio repeater directory were incorrect. Now, the inaccuracy "rating" is about 33%.

    2 meters

I think the attraction to the 2m band is two-fold: 1. It's accessible because the radios are inexpensive. The lowest-priced 2m handheld from a traditional amateur radio manufacturer is a Yaesu FT-4XR ($95). If you decide to go with a radio from a Chinese manufacturer, the prices are even less...

Thoughts on building a portable base station, antenna mount on enclosure

Another source of quality roll-up J-pole antennas is N9TAX: Dual band 2M / 70CM Slim Jim Antenna with integrated 10' or 16' Cable. Assuming the radio has an SO-239 ("UHF") connector, I would get a UHF to BNC adapter (see below) and leave the adapter on the radio all the time. Make sure your...

Thoughts on building a portable base station, antenna mount on enclosure

The back of that enclosure appears to be wide open, so there should be no problem routing an antenna cable to the antenna connector on the radio. The problem may be getting your fingers in there to tighten a threaded RF connector. A simple solution would be to adapt the radio to a BNC connector...

Telemetry (HOTD, EOTD, DPU) different channels?

I was under the impression that EOTDs only transmit when the speed or brake line pressure changes or when interrogated by the HOTD.

Icom IC-718 main unit? The IC-718 is a monolithic radio. There is no separate main unit as far as I know.

    CSX interesting thing

For a time, CSX operated the IB and IC desks separately on day shift and ran them combined as the IB desk on the other shifts. Maybe they've gone back to that.
