147.360 Traffic

Anyone have any idea as to what is going on at this repeater? Sounds like World War Three between some hams. Do not normally monitor this repeater and was amazed at the open hostility. Does not sound like I would program it into the Yaesu transceiver for any QSO's. Very strong here in Central Jersey even on the HT. A lookup shows this as NYCARS. Any ideas or clarifications?

I locked them out a long time ago. Reminds me of truckers on a CB. It is NYCARES and they are out of Manhattan. They use PL 107.2 and I believe the callsign I heard was WA2ZLB.

Yeah! I've pulled them out on scanners, mobile, and ht's. How do these guys stay on the air? One tenth of that behavior and I'd be (justifiably) persona non grata on every repeater in the tri state area and the little FCC truck would be pulling up in my driveway. Is this an ongoing rage-net orjust a one-time free-for all?

The repeater is located on top of the GE Building at Rock Center in Manhattan. It's sponsored and maintained by employees of NBC Radio & TV.

Like any other very wide coverage area ham repeater, sometimes things get out of hand.

From the goings on that I heard this week, that is a BIG understatement. Like calling Jaws just a "fishie". Even I learned a few new words and verbal attack skills. Those guys must have eaten too much steroid laden red meat. NBC employees ought to stop by a few shacks for a counseling session. Not what I expected from an ARES repeater. Sad and disappointing!

Fortunately, it was not any member of our EmComm group (NYC-ARECS) that was involved in the verbal barrage heard, but instead it was N2YHI (a local nuisance) and some others. I was working on some computer projects while all that was going on and did not hear any of it. I understand that my wife and I were targets of some of the nasty comments. By the time the the NYDXA SWL & Scanner Net was on at 9PM Wednesday, all of the shenanigans were over.

Bruce Williams/N2YHI unfortnately attracts all the jamming. The same exact thing goes on the GMRS repeater which is located atop the same building on 462.675 MHz.

As for the cabbies, MAARC was notorious for their monopolization of the repeater for years, especially their ringleader Ira/N2NMA. I know several years ago, the NYC-TLC was notified about this problem and that their hack licenses were in jeopardy because of their operation of 2-way radios on 2-meters, 220, 440 and 10-meters, which is a violation for the medallion yellow taxis.

Illegal cab freqs are the enemy within, they step over very important freqs such as NYC HHC PD & Rikers Island freqs over here in Brooklyn... :evil:

You should tape or digitally record the interference with dates, times, frequency, repeater and services affected and forward it all to Rollie Hollingsworth at the FCC Enforcement Bureau.

Be sure it is interference and not intermodulation. Even triple conversion receivers aren't immune to the amount of RF bombarding their front end.

The GRMS repeater located atop the same building (GE Bldg) on 462.675 MHz has also been shut down by Riley and Co.

Its amazing how one or two turds can ruin it for all of us (as well as for the repeater trustees). Mr. Hargrove's nets were awesome and they will be sorely missed. Where will these ja-bonies go next? 14.275 would make them feel at home. There's always QRZ - the home of unfriendly hams.

Sad news, Bruce.

147.36 was one of the original ham repeaters in the area and was licensed as WR2AHU back in the 70's. Then it became W2SNM (along with the obvious puns). The big deal on that repeater 32 years ago was whether to put an after-transmission courtesy tone on it or not. It was debated ad nauseum on the air. Listening on my tunable radio at the time, it was my first exposure to ham radio club politics.

Guys, all is not lost. The FCC issued a warning to N2YHI in early March. The nets that were active on 147.360 (NYDXA Scanner/SWL Net, NYC-ARECS Net) have moved to the N2ROW system (www.n2row.net) as of a week after MAARC was shut down.

What would be the point? For many it's just easier to target and silence legitimate, licensed users who are unpopular then it is to go after rouge, unlicensed (and otherwise) jammers.
