I just passed my Technician exam and I'm thinking about that first radio. I was thinking about a single band, hand held, 2 meter radio and in looking around on the web I've come up with two models. The Yeasu VX-170 and the Kenwood TH-K2AT.
My thinking was to get a radio that is simple and forgiving.
I've been scanning for years and I program my Uniden BCD 396T with no problem, I've done two firmware upgrades ( I think upman should design an arm patch you could sew on your sleeve to show the world what you've accomplished) so I have a little experience playing with recievers.
I was hoping some of you could weigh in and tell me what you think and offer suggestions for the first rig!
Thanks!

Can't recommend a HT -but for a mobile I like my Yaesu 7800's. If you can program a 396 then a 7800 is a piece of cake.

Congrats on getting your ticket !!!

I agree with kyguy, as far as a mobile I love my ft-7800. Excellent radio. I have the programming cable for it but once I got the hang of it is was just as fast to program without. The last few radios I have purchased have been Yaesu(FT-450, FT-7800, VX1R) and I have had great luck with them. I have not used the VX-170 but as far as a brand goes they seem to make a quality product. Also congrats on the Tech!

Undisclosed urban location.
If your interest is a single band HT, you can't go wrong with a VX-170.
Built like a tank.
Takes both user and elemental abuse with ease.
Programming is a breeze.

I would recommend a icom ic-V82 for 2meter hand held and a Yaesu ft-1802m for mobile both easy to use and big enough for so you fat finger anything.
