I purchased a Radio Shack 20-047 usb programming cable, & i can't get it to work. When i plug it in to my Pro 96 i get "Clone Mode, up to send, remove cable to exit". messed with it for a while and nothing. I am running Win XP & Win96

I would be thankful for help in fixing this problem,
Thanks in advance,

What software are you trying to use with it?

As it says on the package "requires software, not included"

EDIT: N/m I missed that part in your post.

I don' use Win96, but in Win97 you have to tell the software what port to use. That cable is not a real USB cable, but a USB to Serial Converter. It sets itself up as a serial port on your computer and you have to find out which port it is assigned to.

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Ports

When connected, the cable will show up as a USB Serial Port and have a COMx assignment.

How did you install the driver for the cable? I do believe that is how it works with the usb cable though. Just watch for it to finish on the win96 screen. I have not re-installed the driver for the usb cable on my system since a hard drive failure. If I can find the disk I will do it.

I see you have a Pro 97 listed, does the cable work with that scanner? May want to reload your drivers and check that the comm port is correct. I had to reset my comm port a couple of times with Win 96 before it finally worked.

I think he is using it with a Pro-96. Both scanners are listed. The cable works with both scanners. You don't want the extra adapter cable attached when using with the 96 or 97.

Give me a few minutes. I found the cable and disk in my laptop case. I need to install it.

That is normal.
In Win96, choose Scanner > Upload To Scanner
What message does it give you after you try this?

Ah, beat me to it. Yes this is normal. If you do not have the right port selected it will fail if you do a download/upload. But is normal to say clone mode on the 96 until you select upload. Then it will just say clone mode and have a progress bar.

Most important thing when installing is to follow the directions in the manual that is on the disk as a .pdf file. To find out which port your cable is on use device manager and view ports. The one that states (usb serial port) should be the cable.

Ok, are you trying to send the data from radio to pc? If so are you pressing the UP arrow, then confirming as the display asks? I had a problem with my ports setting on the '97. Just had to start punching in numbers, 1, 2, etc. Finally, port 5 setting worked. I use the 20-047 for both the '96 & '97. Port settings are different for each of '96 & '97 for me. Maybe diffrent for other users.

 You don't press any scanner buttons.

How does the PC know which scanner is used? The port is defined when plugging the cable into the USB Jack regardless of a scanner.

Do this test with the cable unplugged from the PC and both scanners in another world:
Control panel > Systems > Hardware tab > Device Manager. Click on the + next to Ports (COM & LPT). Note that no USB Serial Port is listed (unless for another USB Device). Plug cable into USB Jack - observe the addition of USB Serial Port with new COMx.

Okay, I was wrong on both counts. You do not have press the ^ arrow to send to the file. Just plug the cable into the side port on the P-96/97 and click "import from scanner",after you bring up a "New Template" on the screen. As far as the ports go, fmon you were correct. I forgot that the port on the laptop was different from the port on the desktop. If I confused anyone, I apologize. (Apparently it was me who was confused!)

Under the Configuration tab, look for the Port assignment. You may have to run through each Port number before you find the right one. Mine is Port-3.

Good Luck.

As previously stated in this feed, you don't press any buttons on the scanner with the cable plugged in.

If you are using software, use the Scanner pull-down menu in the software or Ctrl + D to Download from scanner or Ctrl + U to Upload to scanner. The scanner buttons are used to clone from one scanner to another but with a patch cable rather then a programming cable.

Prior to attempting a transfer, you will need to select the correct Com Port as outlined in post #4 by Mischief810 and again in #11 by me. Or you can use the trial and error method as described by dangitdoug in post #14.

I just got mine today as my new comp using windows xp does not have a serial port. When I first tried it after installing it same problems as have been described here and elsewere. I went to device manager and under ports it showed a yellow ? I clicked on that went to update driver and forced it to get the drivers from the supplied cd When it first installed the driver I think it was the stock Windows XP driver. After installing this driverfrom the cd and using win97 everything worked perfect. It auto figured out the port in device mgr. and all I had to do was set win 97 to that port.
