To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Base and fleet package Impalas also had column shifters those years, not just 9c1 & 9c3. You had to RPO a console shifter if you didn't get an LS or SS.

Oh yeah, that's right...mine was an LS and in hindsight I should have bought a base Wimpala with a 3800. Sorry, it was like a bad dream that I have repressed into the darkest corner of my mind.

However, I've not seen any base '06's with a column shifter...all floor consoles.

Not all the 2000-2005 civvies are center console floor shifters, our 2001 is on the column. The base model (non LS) doesn't get the console or floor shifter.

Radio Install In Impala

I have a 2006 Impala LS with bench seats and shift on the column. In Canada at least, both are still available on current regular production models. On our 2007 units, bucket seats are standard and bench is optional (excellent for radio hobbyists!)
Anyway....I just had a Jotto Desk console installed in my Impala today - haven't even taken pictures but I will soon and post them here. I have an ICOM V-8000 VHF and UNIDEN BCD996T Scanner installed and am extremely happy with the fit and the install. Pics to follow next day or two when I get them taken.

Here is the inside of the 2007 Police Package Impala as well as a shot of the Jotto Desk contour console I put in them. Just an idea for those without the floor shifters.

Impala

Thanks for the pics on the police unit. I acquired my Impala specifically with the bench seat/column shift (vs the buckets) for radio install considerations. As we know most new cars today don't leave much room for our radios. I went with the Jotto Desk after seeing a friend's install in a Gov't vehicle. Attaching a pic of his install and will send mine when available.

I rented a monte carlo with those heating/stero controls. Whoever designed that should be shot.

Bravada, how did you get an LS with a bench seat and column shift? I just went on the Chevy.com site and "built" a stripped LS and the only seat choice was 40/40 buckets and a center console.

*edit* I bumped up to a "3LT" package with the 3.9 V6 and I could choose 40/40 buckets or the 40/20/40 bench...bizarre. If indeed I could get an Impala LT with a 3.9 V6 and front bench, I may have to re-examine my personal loathing of the GM W platform.

Impala Radio Install

I suspect the U.S. packages are different from our Canadian packages. Split bench seats with column mounted shifters are available optionally here in the LS/LT/LTZ models but you can only get the 3.9L engine with the LTZ.
Here's a picture of the radio install in my 2006 Impala LS. I used the Jotto Desk vertical console, it's custom made for the vehicle and fits really well. It's just what I needed now if I just had another radio for the bottom slot!

That looks great. I always like seeing vehicle-specific consoles, and your install is no exception. Is Chevy still putting in a power drop with retained acc'y power under the glovebox? It made a great point to get ignition sense for the commercial radios I had in my 2002 Impala LS.

I've got my CB radio mounted on the right side of the shifter console in my 06 Impala, like Chipster. The Bearcat handheld scanner is mounted on a Panavise mounting bracket to the right of the stereo. Should think about checking out the Panavise or Profit brackets if you want to put in a handheld. They make great stuff, have been using them for years. Bracketron also has some universal mounts that will work, their IPOD mounts will fit most of the new handheld scanners.

The console shifter is available in the US, not just in Canada models. You need to have RPO AN3.

AN3 Seat, front 40/20/40 split-bench with cloth or

AN3 Seats, front 40/20/40 split-bench with leather-appointed seating, includes (KA1) heated driver and right-front passenger seats and (AG2) 6-way power front passenger seat adjuster

Shifter, column
1 - Included and only available with (AN3) front 40/20/40 split-bench seat.

You cannot get it with the 2008 1LZ or 1SS, however.

This may sound off topic but how about a view inside of a law enforcement vehicle...they put electronics in these cars as a way of life and perhaps you may get an idea of how to arrange things.

I have the same 06 Impala LTZ with full console. I have a scanner installed on the left side of the console now. I did have a mini CB installed under the dash on the left side of the steering wheel. I made it a point to mount it as high as I could so as not to interfere with the emergency brake cause I use it all the time. It didn’t work out to well, I still kept hitting the wiring and the bottom of the radio. I have since taken it out and have plans to mount the CB on the right side of the console, like I did the scanner. I haven’t done it yet, but I have plans of mounting a Yaesu FT-5200 dual bander in the trunk with the remote head on the left side of the steering wheel under the dash. I figure that will be OK since a remote head is so small. My current problem is I cant find my remote mounting kit. Yaesu don’t make them anymore, and I have not found one to buy that is reasonably priced. May just have to break down and buy a new radio. Mmmm, dilemma.

I stuck a glass mount scanner antenna on the back window between the rear defroster wires. It works remarkably well. I wont do a thru glass antenna for a transmitter though. For that, I have purchased two Comet RS-730 lip mounts to mount just under the read deck lid lip. Hanging them off the back of the lid is the best I can come up with that doesn’t hit the car roof when the trunk is opened. I considered making a strap iron bolted to the frame and bringing it out just above the tail pipes but decided that was to much trouble to properly fabricate. I am pretty fussy about that kind of stuff.

As far as purchasing a commercial console. Don’t waste your time. I have researched those things to death. None of them will fit unless you remove the factory console. I will not do that. I like the factory console to much to remove it. That makes it harder to put radios in, but the commercial consoles look like crap in my opinion. Not that a rolling antenna farm looks any better…..

I will try to post pictures here in this thread, but I have never had much luck with that. Anyone can E-Mail me at N9QKG@SBCGLOBAL.NET and I will happily send the pictures straight to you.

You should purchase an after market stereo then in-dash mount the scanner the cb will fit between the dash and center console
