To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just ordered one of these! The L version has only been out a few months and there is not too much info on it vs. the regular version. As this link says, it may just be a larger capacity battery. Posted it in case someone else is interested. I like the larger battery, frame and bigger larger buttons vs the UV-5R. I also like the rocker style dual PTT switch. Mine wil be here tomorrow. There is a local NJ dealer which worked out well for me here in CT.

I have actually **considered** getting the UV-82. (Don't tell RR user DarthVader! He'd never let me hear the end of it lol) It's actually a good sized radio, unlike the smaller Barf-fung radios.

A user on another forum did this great review on the radio. Unfortunately it's not very good at suppressing spurious emissions and is basically a repackaged UV-5R.

Do be careful on the battery packs, some were mislabeled at the factory and are not 3000ma.

Keep us updated on how you like it!

Thank you for posting what is a great detailed review! Barf-Fung ey? Too funny! I am expecting mine today by 4PM. I will put the radio through its paces and report back! I sold a few items on fleabay so it did not come out of my pocket. I ordered it more out of curiousity than anything else. For $60 I'm not going to go nuts. It's not my first Baofeng so I have a realistic set or expectations. After you experience Motorola commercial radio quality and performance, you're kind of spolied anyway! LOL...

My pleasure! October 28? I would have blown a gasket or two by now! LOL... I ordered mine Sunday afternoon through fleabay and it is going to be here really soon! Thats one of the reasons I went with someone close! As I write this, I can hear the mailman down the street. ( very quiet neighborhood ) I can't wait. I love new toys!

First Impressions!

Well, so far results are mostly negative.
The good:

Audio is loud and clear TX/RX
Fits well in large hands
Good antenna comparable to my HT1250 Motorola antenna.
Strong belt clip

The bad:

Radio still has cheap plastic feel to it.This includes buttons.
No button to switch between VFO/Memory
Nasty squelch tail. Easily outdone by the cheapest of scanners Even at highest setting.
CTCSS/DCS use does not stop serious intermod / overload isues in high RF areas.

Again, this is a first impressions report. I kept my expectations low, knowing that this is a $60 radio
not a $200 or higher radio.
I'm going to sell it or return it. I cannot get past the awful squelch tail.

A slight stepup in quality.

I recently picked a UV-82L as well and think its a slight step up from the rest of the Baofengs I have played with. The quality and feel seem really nice compared to the UV-5R, but the software is similar with a few more options.

I also picked up a Baofeng BF-F9. I knew its the same as a UV-5R but the reverse black screen had me curious. IT DOES NOT LOOK AS GOOD IN PERSON AS IT DOES ON THE INTERNET PHOTOS. Ohh well.

*shrugs* What? Actually, I've been pondering one myself, but being the Great Procrastinator that I am (especially with things that cost money) it probably won't be happening for quite a while, especially with Christmas approaching. But I had the opportunity to head down to that truck stop in Troutdale I mentioned here: http://forums.radioreference.com/everything-else/57686-word-association-252.html#post2066188 and examined their nonfunctioning display-model 82 (not an 82L.) I will say that the chassis size alone is a major improvement over my workhorse 5R with the 3800mAh battery, especially in my abnormally large hands; almost as wide as my bulky PRO-94, but shorter and not as thick. (Too bad Uniden couldn't have beaten BF to the punch there.) I'm told by people who have them that the receiver's better than the one in the 5R; at least as good as the 3R paired with a decent-sized aerial. Also binary-compatible with the 5R, so what you could do in Chirp with that rig you could likely also do here.

I probably would have gotten one had they not wanted almost $100 for it. In the radio's defence, everything's twice to three times as expensive as it needs to be there. Even a 1-pound box of raisin bran [$2.25 at Winco] will set the unwitting trucker back almost $6.00. (One word: Amazon.)

4CS, I expect a full (non-biassed) writeup and analysis of its performance....

The snarky comment was because me and you have had a few debates about Chinacom radios, and my hatred for them are pretty well known around here ;)

I have not purchased the radio. I really thought about it but just couldn't do it. I cannot support Baofang by purchasing one of their radios (vote with your wallet etc.)

I believe I linked to a fairly good review in a previous post on this thread. From what I've read in a few reviews, some have said it's a better radio than the 5R, others say it's the same or even slightly worse than a 5R.

Yes, I saw that review; I'm still beating the idea around of gravitating toward the 82 or a B5. I and my hands definitely find the 82's ergonomics favourable over the boxy little "candybar" rigs I've become used to over the past year, including my long-gone VX2R. (Yes, I had a Yaesu one once upon a time, and you can credit my hyperactive dog for destroying it -- different story for a different thread.)

Having to switch the radio off to kick between tuner and preset modes still strikes me as a "why the ... did they do THAT?" thing. I suppose it is to keep certain types of users (e.g. employees at a supermarket) from easily accessing frequencies they're not authorised to transmit on. This is fairly easy to do with others like the 3R and 5R.

"The snarky comment was because me and you have had a few debates about Chinacom radios, and my hatred for them are pretty well known around here."

Yeah, I know. I've decided to unofficially collectively term them the "Vader-4CS Debate"; also a subtle nod to a certain famous controversy between Linus Torvalds and Andrew Tannenbaum.

EDIT ADD:
Yeah, based on this review: http://hamgear.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/review-baofeng-uv-b5-baofeng-uv-b6/, if I get a new rig it'll probably be a B5, not an 82. At this point, the 82 is still too new and bug-ridden for comfort. That's assuming I don't just throw caution to the wind, say "screw it" to my reluctance of the three-figure price sticker and grab a Wouxon. (Thanks for pointing out that site, by the way, 4CS.)

Possible difference?

I own a UV82 and just got in a UV82L for a friend. The only things I notice different about the two is the UV82L came with a slightly larger batter 3000 vs 2800mAh (as people have mentioned before) The other thing is the UV82 shows to have 8 watts output power and the 82L shows 5 watts. Not sure if this is correct or not. Just reading from the tag on the radios.

I just ordered one. I like the dual PTT feature. I can listen to the radio while my son plays at the park and can communicate with him easily at the same time.

I use my UV-5 in my car with a mag mount. I like the small size it's about the size of a microphone speaker.

I do want to try some of the higher end stuff some day but for now, at 40-50 dollars a radio,
The urge to buy something radio related can be satisfied for a very reasonable price.

UV-82

I got mine yesterday. It is the 2 meter/222 MHz model, and once my computer decided to talk to it, everything works well. The squelch tail can be set in the Baofeng software, although I like Chirp a little better than the Baofeng program. The battery fits as tight as my Motorola radios and has about the same capacity. I also have the UV-B5 which is a good bargain. For the money, you can't do much more. My total cost with an extra battery for each is around $130. Getting into VFO is a little different, but similar to two of my Motorola radios. The menu system is fairly simple. As far as the plastic quality, you can get better, just plunk down the $$$ for a Motorola or other commercial quality. You can buy several UV-82's for the price of one commercial handheld.

Just received my UV-82 today. Programmed it with the same cable I used for the UV-5R. Had to download different software for programing to work. The sound of the 1w speaker is immediately noticeably different. Deeper richer sound.

Compared to my UV-5RE the UV-82's reception is more clear than the UV-5RE with an after market antenna.

I haven't done much testing against the UV-5re but I think ok hitting more repeaters too.

I really like the UV-5r's but I think I like the UV-82 better.

Too bad I can't use the same batteries as my UV-5r...

radio newbie needing advice

I am looking at possibly buying a pofung UV-5R UHF/VHF Dual-Band Two-Way Amateur Ham Radio FM Walkie Talkie. I have never used a ham radio. I really have not used a walkie talkie

since when they first came out. I remember buying a little set of walkie talkies for my children way back when, lol,
The reason I am looking to buy it is to contact others in an emergency. I live in an urban area with many buildings. If there is no way to communicate with others by computer or phone, i want

to be able to contact others. I have a son who lives about 5-6 miles away but there are so many buildings and stuff between us, so it is not like we are in the country. Would this radio help me

to talk with him or anyone else or should i look at a different product? Would anything work for the range i need and the fact that I am in a city with many buildings. thanks for any advice. I

am a newbie, lol
