Here is what I can tell you about the Portland Grand Prix. Safety teams are on UHF DMR on radios provided by Racing Electronics.

Thanks for the info. I am new to most of this, and an unfamiliar with UHF DMR.

I just googled it, DMR is Digital Mobile Radio, so I assume it can't be received by my analog scanner?

I went to the race track for the practice day, Doing some scanning with my bc125AT, here is what I found.

Indycar officials appear to be on 468.8250

Indycar Radio appears to be on both 455.9875 & 450.8875. In addition, I heard them on 450.9625, but I also heard someone feeding driver bio info and track status over the top (which was then incorporated into the play by play.)

I heard Paul Tracy and others during practice 2 on three frequencies. I assuming these will be used by the nbcsports tv broadcast. All three frequencies sounded the same to me, I am not sure the difference in them. They were 450.2250 450.1375 & 455.4500.

The camera director (at least for the track) was on 455.0625. Technical jargon while the practices were going on about camera changes, joking and other talk before/after.

I couldn’t find any safety team transmissions.

FYI: I couldn't find any places to rent a scanner or get frequencies today. I assumed that they pretty much always has a shop or two at each race to rent/sell scanners and sell frequency lists, but if there was one I couldn't find it.

I have a little more info for the race tomorrow, I was at qualifying today.

Tv broadcast (qualifying): I heard director stuff (countdown to commercial) all three frequencies I posted yesterday. In addition, I found one more frequency (with the same issue) on 450.4875. Basically, the last 20 seconds of each segment were blocked by the countdown, otherwise, the rest was good.

I did find a clean broadcast however on 450.5875. I suspect this is the one to listen to tomorrow for the actual race broadcast (if you want to hear the tv announcers call the race.)

The 450.4875 is used for pit announcers so they can follow what the booth is talking about, along with the breaks. You might find camera PL (program loop) with the director calling out the cameras to be aired. Pit announcers usually have a talk back freq so they can talk with the booth or truck off air, could be 5 Mhz higher than the 450 stuff you found.

I think IRL rules prohibit encryption, race control monitors team traffic to make sure there isn't any hanky panky going on.

So, doing some sleuthing with sdrsharp and DSDPlus and my SDR stick, I found the Safety Team. It’s on 464.1750 DMR on Slot 1. The bad news is that it’s encrypted with Enhanced Privacy.

I talked to a member of the safety team a few weeks ago, he said their radios sound like crap. At one time they had a separate channel for the docs, I bet that's what you found.

I thought that would be the case. I can’t see a reason for them to move from Analog to DMR other than to add encryption capabilities.

Thanks for the help everyone, and the explanation as to why they were sending the tv audio around the track. It was very helpful to hear the tv commentary during the race (despite Tracy rapping his version of “Gin & Juice” during a tv break.)

It made it much easier to track all the strategy at today’s race. I had another fan behind me ask about the pit stops, I would have been lost as to who was on what strategy without either the tv or radio feed.

No scanner rentals or frequency lists to buy this year at PIR, if you didn’t already own your own equipment or know how to scan and find the frequencies on your own you were out of luck.

Just to consolidate for future events, here are the frequencies (other than car to pit) listed in the spotter guide I found for the GP of Portland this year.

Race Control: 468.8250

INDYCAR radio network: 455.9875
Alternate with other people: 450.9625 450.8875

NBCSN broadcast: 450.5875
Alternate with other people: 450.1375 450.2250 450.4875 455.4500

Track tv direction (instructing where to point camera for shots) 455.0625

The broadcast freqs change by location, the SBE (society of broadcast engineers) coordinator assigns those part 74 freqs to avoid local stations.

Did you use the Verizon app? I'm curious if the IRL will be able to continue that feature after Verizon leaves.

I know the frequencies change by location, but hopefully they will be the same at Portland next year. It’s at least a place to start, at worse I have to find them again manually next year.

I tried the Verizon app. Cell phone data coverage was impossible on at&t the entire weekend, data simply did not work despite 4 bars most times. Verizon worked for people near me in the stands until race day, then it got slow during the actual race. I loaded my iPad up with a pay as you go t-mobile plan for race day, that worked well during raceday (but no advanced features such as telemetry due to the app limitations )

I am hopeful that all the data will be available next year to everyone’s cell phone. I am planning on buying the nbc gold subscription as well, looking forward to watching qualifying for every event next year.
