I remember the Pro-79 - great radio. Back then, I was using a Pro-2006 and BC-210XLT. Still use them today. Both great radios for lowband.

I don't remember British military on those frequencies. I was listening less in those years, as I was a few years out of college and working full time. Lowband fire is great - 33mhz and also 46mhz here in in the NY/NJ area. Loved those daily tests with the tone-outs and ID.
I still have my Pro-79 somewhere. I’ve owned several Pro-2006s but unfortunately have sold them all over the years. I wish I had held onto one of them, same goes for one of the Pro-2052s I sold off years ago.

Sounds similar to my first experience with lowband DXing. I remember hearing British Military traffic on 30.100 or 30.200 or another “low 30s” frequency at some point in 2002 or 2003 using my first scanner (a RadioShack Pro-79) with the factory rubber duck antenna. I then stumbled upon the 39 MHz and 42 MHz highway patrol bands, which, at the time, had a lot more activity on them. Same with 33 MHz for fire / EMS activity. I was hooked after that.

For those who do (or don’t) remember: here’s the Pro-79:

Rigpix Database - Pro-79
That's amazing thanks for sharing.

Looks like another dead day... Hopefully with the hotter weather we're not seeing a shift away from this out here. So far, today is looking good, King William is in LOUD this morning. More tonight.

If you can hear 26.765 MHz AM, check:

25.695 MHz AM
25.835 MHz AM
27.195 MHz AM
27.255 MHz AM (CB Channel 23)

When the band is opening to points south, there’s often a MFSK data stream (sometimes with a constantly going series of FFSK / FSK and/or MFSK data bursts on 27.195, along with AM voice comms. Likely also Mexico City on 27.195 AM. Same with 27.255 AM (which, incidentally, is usually jam-packed with RCRS/Class C data signals, including paging signals - while 4w is allowed on 26.995 / 27.045 / 27.095 / 27.145 / 27.195…25w is allowed on 27.255, since is is shared with regular AM / FM / SSB “Class D” CB radio service. There’s often a YL dispatcher on those frequencies (and many others in the 25.6 MHz - 28.0 MHz range) when 26.765 AM is coming in nicely.

There’s actually a method to the madness in terms of the Mexican taxi ladies or taxistas. Juanita has a distinctive “Roger Beep” on 26.765 and other frequencies. In addition, in Mexico City, the taxis themselves have alphanumeric identifiers. Outside of CDMX, only numeric identifiers are used (usually). It’s quite interesting when the band is really rolling…but also a bit of an annoyance when the taxis (and Mexican truckers on 26.585 AM, 26.595 AM, Puerto Rican “big radios” on 26.705 AM / 26.715 AM causing QRM to German FM CB on the German FM only channels 26.565 MHz - 26.955 MHz (10 kHz steps) and/or the Mexican taxi cab dispatchers on 27.775 MHz AM and/or 27.785 MHz AM are causing severe QRM to UK FM CB channel 19 on 27.78125 MHz FM).

But I digress. A quick check of the band indicated that CHP (and some local signals) coming in nicely, also some strong over the horizon radar (OTHR) signals in the 31 MHz / 32 MHz region, with ~32.500 MHz center frequency being very strong, full scale BUZZZZ

39.400 MHz standing out with both 162.2 Hz and 186.2 Hz tones, sometimes signals on top of each other, 43.320 MHz coming in with 074 DCS (local use) [Slurry Pavers - license KZI481] and 43.320 MHz 131.8 Hz [Rowe Materials WRAK783] in the noise.
