That's exactly what it means - I heard a MaxTrac radio in use. If you're good, you're good - they make certain sounds when unkeyed that are dead giveaways - and I'm certain enough as to what I hear that I'd almost bet the farm. You're talking to a guy who can decode DTMF in his head without even thinking about it.

OK, they could be Radius versions, but same thing, right? 16-pin MaxTrac-type mobiles all make a very unique sound.

Interesting. I guess I haven't noticed the sound they make. I have a few maxtracs here so I'm going to test and see what it sounds like.

You'll notice units with a 16-pin accessory connector make a different "unkey" sound than those with a 5-pin accessory connector. You must be encoding PL/DPL to really hear it. The 16 pin units have a "ka-thump", the 5-pin units just a thump (when used with an HMN1056 type mic).

Baltimore County Fire used to use this frequency years ago to patch Maryland
State Police medevac helos. Don't think they have much use for it with all now having 700/800 TRS radios in all units.

Not to the same degree. The MaraTrac used a modified systems 9000 control group, with a Systems 9000 type microphone interface which was much softer and more difficult to identify.
