Does anyone know if Uniden is planning a mobile version of the 246T? I am planning on buying one but don't want to spend my $$$ if the mobile 246T is to be released within the next several months to a year. I like the Pro-2051 but no alpha tags! A mobile version of this great scanner would be excellent! I know they are busy working on the 396, maybe after it is released? Thanks for any info.

Safetyobc,

I e-mailed Larry Van Horn, Monitoring Times Assistant Editor and Milcom Columnist, and asked the same question.

Larry e-mailed me back and said: "Actually, you can be happy with this handheld. As I pointed out in the review, the only downside is no digital, no milair. Uniden has not announced nor have we heard through any backdoor channels that they will be releasing a base/mobile anytime in the near future. My crystal ball is sharp through the summer of 2005.

Maybe the "new scanner product that no one has yet heard of" that Uniden will be showing at Hamvention will be the answer.

Here's a fantasy idea that might work for future. How about a drop in charger/speaker/display for mobile use? Similar to something that Motorola (I think?) has available for some of it's radios. Yes. Jump in the vehicle, drop the radio into the console and poof...mobile scanner. Then when you get out, back to regular tiny portable. Good drugs make me dream :)

At my computer, duh!
Hey, just making scanners with charging bases like real portables would be a huge step forward. Even cooler if there was some kind of standard chunk size. (Not necessarily they all fit the same charger, too many variations and requirements, but a Uniden 246T charger fits in a 2x4 block opening.) You'll never get auto makers to put scanner chargers in the console, but if you could buy the charger from Uniden for your FRS or scanner or Garmin for your GPS or you get the picture.

But it'll never happen, we can't get them to go to higher density 12v connectors instead of cigarette lighter plugs.

It's in Dayton, Ohio May 20,21, & 22...according to the hamvention web site.

This is the post by UPMan from the Scanning Forum:

I sent the following out to our Master Distributors, but I know that some dealers hang out here, so want to give all dealers their best shot at hearing about this.

====================
This year, Uniden is sending a representative to Hamvention in Dayton to help support our dealers, distributors, and other partners, as well as to get some direct input from the user community. I will be attending Friday and Saturday, all day both days.

We will be taking the opportunity to introduce an exciting new scanner product that no one has yet heard about, and I should have a fairly good looking prototype sample to show off. We'll issue a press release and release product details at the beginning of the show so that all of our partners have access to the information. My goal for the show is to spend most of my time in dealer booths with a "Meet the Uniden Rep" tour...but I need your help. I am aware of the following Uniden dealers or other partners that have booths at the show:

AES Amateur Electronic Supply
Computer Aided Technologies
Ham Radio Outlet
National Communications Magazine
ScannerMaster Corp
The Ham Station
Universal Radio

If you know of others, please let me know, and also let them know that they can schedule time for me to be in their booth by emailing me directly. If they would like to coordinate this with any other type of promotion, now is the time to set that up, as well. Scheduling will be on a "First Come, First Served" basis...I'd like to spend about an hour at each dealer's exhibit and leave a half hour or so between events in order to ensure I can start at the next venue in time, but at this point I am very flexible.

I guess I'll be waiting to buy anything until after I see what this new product is. I hope it is the mobile 246T. I'll be first in liine if it is!
