Hi Mil Air buffs!
I caught someone on this frequency this afternoon at 3:11 p.m. and there was a bad high-pitched whiny noise in the background. Had trouble making out what he was saying but I did catch a few words. Heard "something" 02 "something" 02, callsign maybe? and something about McChord AFB and then a thanks or something like that. I looked up that frequency on the net and the Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light HSL-45 Wolfpack uses that frequency. I'm sure other units uses that frequency too so it probably wasn't them but you never know. That whiny noise may have been coming from a helicopter though. Hmmm
I was searching between 250.0000 & 260.0000 when it stopped on that frequency. I live in northwest montana so it was cool catching that transmission. Might have possibly been a fighter jet too. Did anyone else hear that at around that time?

That's pretty cool hearing that in Montana. Isn't that like the middle of nowhere? No pun intended, not picking on you. lol Are there any military bases in your area? Maybe that's where it came from.

Although I'm in CA now, I used to be stationed at Ellsworth AFB in SD, I'm ex-military. It was a lot of fun back then listening to military air stuff.

Yeah, I live in Libby, Mt. which is considered around here as being in the sticks or boondocks, actually back in the pioneer days; i.e. 1860 to 1920 or so, this area was called the montana wilds back then. We used to have a small radar station up in the yaak area back in the 1950's I believe; Cold War era. I do pick up some Mil Air around here from time to time. I get the refueling tankers flying over every few days and listen to them on 238.9000 and 292.6000. Other freq's I hear are 319.4000 and 303.0000, 311.0000 and 321.0000 and other's.
I also hear pilots talking to fairchild afb once in a while. I remember once I heard some comm's on 282.6000 out of Devil's lake, ND. AWACS plane and some jets talking. So I do get to listen to some Mil Air around here. I can't hear Fairchild AFB but do hear the pilots as it's too far away. We do have a small national guard armory here but that's it. Never did hear them yet. Not much else going on around here so will see you later. Keep on listening and logging.

Could it have been a C-130? I know that when they transmit on the radio, all you can hear in the background is the whining of their 4 big propellers.

Hi Trainman111
It could have an C-130, or it could have been something else. Hard saying. I wonder if it could have been some kind of wierd digital transmission in the background? It was a med high pitched eeeeeeeeeeeeeee or it may have propellers. Who knows? Haven't heard it since but have the freq in my scanner just in case.

The whine you hear on a lot of larger aircraft isn't from the propellers. It is alternator noise from the 400 Hz AC power system.

That's very true. I guess a prop. whine isn't really much a high pitch whine, it's more of a hum, now that I think of it. It could have been alternator noise. Either way, more likely than not, it was a larger transport plane and not a fighter.
