I used to be a certified terminal operator. I was looking at one of our olets terminals the other day. I would not have a clue how to do anything. It has changed so much. Back doors???
The only back doors I know of is to avoid olets and go to odis's direct link to the tax comm. I was using it this week. I found a feature I did not know about. You can type in a address and it will give you all the cars registered there and the owners name.....god I love it. Most of the problems relating to Vehicle license plates has to do with the fact that the individual tag agencies are the ones that enter the info into the Tax Comm computers. I have never saw anyone I would call a brain surgeon working there.

The Tax commission search is one of the best kept secrets of ODIS IMHO :D

You're right about the tag agencies... one of the major snafu's is the 3 letter vehicle model on a VREG return almost always never matches the ones used by OLETS/NLETS/NCIC, and usually never make much sense.

Maybe that's why my F-150 Lariat is a "work truck" and my Dodge Intrepid is a 2-door?

c2b, I'm honored to have made your quote list. It's about time someone around here shows some appreciation for my prose.

I give you a gift. It has nothing to do with what we're talking about but I'm sure that anyone involved in the business of lawr enferercment will enjoy and agree:

To get to Fantasyland turn right and go past tomorrow land. When a drivers license is run it goes to olets in OKC. Olets then fowards it to nlets for an NCIC check. So your message goes over phone lines to OKC. Then to Virginia over the phone lines.

Sort of. As you say - OLETS to NLETS to NCIC.... But to get to NCIC it goes on
phone lines, which can be twisted pair, copper coax, microwave, or fiber, through
DS3, OC3, etc, to Arizona, THEN to Virginia. The shortest distance between two
points? HAH!

http://www.nlets.org/about/?cid=6

is a great history of the system.

Combined warrants check.....like I said fantasyland. A lot of counties do not enter most of their warrants into NCIC. I heard from a DA in Tulsa less than 50% of the FELONY warrant in Tulsa co. get entered into NCIC. The state has been working on a really great system called ODIS. Ideally you will be able to enter a name and be able to do a warrant check in all 77 counties, 100 something cities, be able to pull up records, booking photos, contacts, accidents, protective orders so forth. I have access to ODIS and it is good and will be great. Two incidents recently brought this out. !st I was looking or a rape suspect. He had a felony warrant. We had no photos. I ran him through odis and got a booking photo rom muldrow pd. The other I was serving a out of county warrant on a subject. I ran him through odis for more info and came up with 17 more warrants. The charges ranged from trafic to drugs. The problem?? Both the Tulsa and OKC metro areas have not embraced it. TPD/TCSO have regfused. They want to stay with TRACIS. I feel it is a major mistake. ODIS is not linked to olets and has to be ran separately. There is another system called Pegasus that some depts are playing with. It is a fingerprint operated system. In the oficers
car there will be a fingerprint reader. The subject places his finger on it and it does all the work.

NCIC 2000 is amazing - IF - your state, and ultimately agency buy into it. Mug shots, fingerprints, ad-hoc inquirys, prison inmate records, etc. Scanners for fingerprings,
card swiping, etc.

http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/ncic.htm

Remember though, like you point out - GIGO. Garbage in, Garbage out. If warrants
are not entered, or trash warrants ARE entered, its all garbage.

there are no back doors on OLETS KOK5CY, end of story. If you're cleared to operate a terminal, why would you need a back door anyways??

To which you wouldn't respond because by your own admission you are not law enforcement neither. So your point is?

No, I'm not calling you an idiot. I was being friendly and having fun with you. You said:

That's called sarcasm. A joke. Ha ha. " :) " I guess I went wrong by pre-supposing that we, as a posting community, communicate as presumed friends, not presumed adversaries.

I offer you this constructive criticism for life: Everyone judges everyone. It's human nautre. In an example like this, the only information we have to judge you by is your postings. And so far you are coming across as having some real personal insecurities about being taken seriously (or about NOT being an LEO yourself). It's amazing to me how you managed to take a interesting technical chat and spun it into a series of perceived personal attacks against you. This discussion is about data retrieval systems, not about you.

I think you would have taken my initial remark as the joke it was intended to be if you weren't so insecure and hyper-sensitive.

As you point out, I don't know any facts about you. But you need to understand that strangers WILL judge you based on the way you communicate. If you don't want people to assume things about you — don't project your insecurities and don't be so pointlessly adversarial.

Lighten up.

Lets see I started my 21 st year as a cop in August. I grew up in a law enforcement family with my brothers, grand father, father , uncles being in law enforcement from local all the way to the FBI. With all that background I did not know jack about olets until I became a dispatcher for a short while in my career. Most cops dont know about olets, how to use it nor it's full capabilities and limitations. Most of the officers that came on in the last few years don't even know what a soundex is. cause your dad is something does not make you have knowledge about what he does. I have a friend, his dad is a convicted child molester does this make him a child molester....... I pray not cause he is a fine police officer with over 15 years experience...............
