This is a question reference this other thread about multi-site system entries on the 396 vs what is avail on the 996...

http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118270

For those of us that have both scanners, this would be very helpful...
I keep my 996 at home and use my 396 at work in my car. It would be helpful to not only be able to transfer systems between the two radios more seamlessly, but also the feature seems to be more appropriate for the 396 as it is a "portable" radio... I realize part of this feature has to do with GPS, and I know that is never going to be a possibility on the 396. However, the multi-site systems is a neat feature for areas like mine with smartnet or smartzone systems and multiple sites where we could enter one "system" with multiple sites and only have to enter one set of talkgroups... Having multiple systems on my 396 seems to clutter everything up.

I thought these two radios were supposed to be basically the same (absent the GPS).
So the question is to UPMan, is this a possibility or really something that either can't happen or probably won't? I'm the type that if you say it won't happen, i won't ask or cry, just accept it and look to the future for a model or brand with that feature... But, if it's something that can be added via firmware, what do ya think about trying to squeeze it in?

There are a number of differences to the radios.

The 996 is a newer / different radio (its not just a 396 with GPS).

I agree multi-site would be a GREAT feature, and probably possible to do but I dont think it will happen. Even the next firmware doesnt mention anything about it (and it included Close Call DND - a feature the 996 has).
Will it happen in the future.. maybe. But I wouldnt bet on it.

For now maybe just program each site as a different system, and give them a similar quick key.

Thats the beauty of the Uniden DMA scanners, you have the room to add up to 400 sites/systems.. try and do that with the GRE's.

Phill,

I'm not sure why you would think that GPS is not a possibility on a portable radio.

I think that one of the most compelling reasons to add BlueTooth to the 996 and 396 is the ability to do things like connecting wireless (BlueTooth) GPS, serial, audio devices etc..

Victor,
its not that i think it's impossible, i just don't believe its possible on this model with the hardware currently installed... As far as the multi-site system feature, it seems that is a software only function that can probably be updated by firmware... I'm just hoping to improve the 396, not design the next generation... Of course if it is possible, i wouldn't mind that either...

I currently run the 996 at home because i'm streaming audio through the internet so when i'm really far out of the area, i can still monitor my local systems... That and the portability issue prevents me from carrying the 996 with me instead of the 396...
