Noticed my 2 model 396xt’s were very quiet.
now I see encryption has sneaked its way into my fire and police and sheriff channels.
in fact your website has posts of 700mhz channels being used now.
SO, IM STILL a citizen and despite some saying it’s not a right, they are naive and mistaken.
when I find the gizmo, gadget or dongle that opens up my scanner to what I’ve been locked out, I’ll be using it just as I have been listening for the last
67 years when I converted a new fm radio to hear local aircraft.
so who is brave enough to show me a working fix for listening to my local law enforcement?

I’ll be looking at the Chinese BAOFENG first, they still sell the 2-way 8 watt radios that can tx/rcv on channels
that hams can’t use because they obey the federal laws.

Save yourself some grief and time. Bottom line is there is no gizmo, gadget or mod you can do. Period. What SHOULD have been done was keeping a keen eye on what your municipality was up to BEFORE the move was made. However, you still may have a say at your local govt meetings but it’s an uphill battle after the fact!

The BCD396XT will not receive anything on the new UCA P25 system. All of the talkgroups are P25 Phase 2 (T in Mode column). Your scanners are capable of P25 Phase 1 only.

Don't know about Utah, but some places, IF YOU ARE AN ACCREDITED NEWS REPORTER, will allow you to buy a police radio from them (for about $5k).

Otherwise,you are SOL.

LOL the baofeng isn't going to do anything the 996XT won't do, in fact a whole lot less. If it's encrypted, you're out, just like the rest of us are out. Might as well save that few bucks. Are you sure it's encrypted or just moved to a new system your 996XT isn't getting?

I had been listening to my local police since about 1965 as a kid on a tunable, even had written assurances from my County Commissioners up to 2021 that my County would stay in the clear in the name of transparency. Then in 2021 they became encrypted and broke their empty promise.

It s*cks man, petitions and going to meetings and complaining is a waste of your time. They don't care, you have to let it go.

This is not the place to continue this, there is a thread in the tavern of the Forum where there's open discussion about encryption, you might want to vent your frustration there.😉

Are you certain that those agencies are actually encrypted now? Maybe you just need an up to date scanner.

If they are actually encrypted, and you really believe that you will be able find a gizmo, gadget, hack, dongle or Chinese radio that will allow you to monitor encrypted transmissions, you would be the one being naive and mistaken.

Anyone know the applicable law(s) offhand?

Sucks the state went the encrypted route. I get the want to limit access to a certain extent. SLC PD goes encrypted next month. We'll find out who else in the Valley we can still monitor then too. Seems most Law enforcement agencies will be quiet for us common folk along the Wasatch Front corridor. Guess I'm going spend more time aviation railroad scanning. Till something probably ruins that hobby too.
