What month is it?
Both a 436 and a 100 of mine have had munged up USB ports.
I have the tools - and the skills, but......

Both went into Uniden for flat rate repairs.

if you need to program the scanner, just use the sd card, if you need to charge use an external charger

Seeing as how the 436 has the worst ever sd card holder, it's probably a lot better to fix or have the usb port fixed than mess with that flimsy sd card holder. Sometimes just swapping batteries in mine causes the no card error.

My SDS100 is a close contender. It's literally a delicate surgical procedure to lift the stupid thing up from the battery compartment surface to pop the card out.

You would think the design would have improved by now... Mine has a very small bend to make it work...

There are other USB card readers used in handheld gear… amateur radio (ham radio) has incorporated them, going to the same type of spring-loaded slot loading the SDS200 uses. The existing card trays used in the 436 & SDS100 are probably used out of a cost saving effort. (I don’t believe there was ever a piece of ham gear that used the trays in the 436 & SDS100 for the obvious reasons stated in this thread. I could be wrong on this point but I’ve never seen them used.)

When I first got my 436 I practiced the “fine art” of removing and replacing an SD card. Being cautious with every move I made, not forcing the tray and watching videos on the subject, I finally learned how to do it. But it took some time… not at all as self-intuitive as the pop-in pop-out caddy on the SDS200 base model!

The pro and con lists of both card holders are short; The flimsy tray found in the two handheld scanners have one advantage over the spring-loaded pop-in pop-out one that comes with the SDS200… there’s no spring or associated mechanism that could go bad. (I have two SDS200’s, one that has a holder that works as advertised and the other not so much. It causes me to leave that SD card in the holder and conduct all changes to the card while it stays in the radio. I’ve had an issue with the mechanism not “clicking” when attempting to insert the card. So I’ve resigned myself not remove the card any more than I have to.) The handhelds have the obvious problem of not only being flimsy, where they can get bent or the cover pops off, they are not “fat-finger” friendly. If you’ve got big paws, find someone with delicate hands and a soft touch.
