North and South Bands only..............

If you monitor Philly's North and South Fire Bands you still hear enough info to paint a somewhat clear picture of the job, the Batt Chiefs give updates often and orders for incomming units are often given over the N/S Bands. I like everyone else in the area wish I could monitor the Tac talkgroups.

OK - makes sense. I didn't think you could hear anything significant on the N/S fire bands.

Also, since we are on the subject, the next day (after the 6 alarm was out) I heard units called "SA" speaking. Would that be "Support Apparatus" units? Sounded like gas tankers, etc.

I checked out the site. Sounds like a volunteer group. They would have PFD radios? Wouldn't the red cross take those duties??

Just wondering.

I'm not sure of the full scope of the Red Cross, but the Second Alarmers purpose is to support the fire and police personnel on the scene of large incidents. This is similar to Canteen 47 in Delaware County.

As for the PFD radios, I can only guess that since they have the full support of the PFD/PPD they are allowed access. I could be wrong so if anyone has more information/facts please jump in.

Normally, the Red Cross is concerned with residents who are affected or displaced by fires/other incidents. The various "canteen services" in the region go out to support fire and police personnel who may be on a scene for a long period of time.

Besides Philly Second Alarmers and Delco Stattion 47, you also have up in Montco, the North Penn Goodwill Canteen Service. North Penn brings out several trucks prodiving hot food, warm places to go sit, and bathroom facilities. There is a Salvation Army unit in Berks County that provides similar services, too. North Penn is also called to areas outside of Montco to provide their services (Lehigh, Northampton, Bucks, etc).
