800 Skip??

my setup is less than optimal for 800mhz...can't even get Greene County here..

What you are experiencing is tropospheric ducting. This is where VHF/UHF signals will hug the curvature of the earth for up to several hundred miles. Lately, we have been experiencing a lot of ducting here in the mid-western states. Radio signals rarely "skip" and bounce off the ionosphere above 150 mHz.

Expect to see this type of thing in the evening as the earth begins to cool off, and the heat rises into the cold air it causes the ducting. Also early in the morning as the sun begins to warm things up... It all has to do with cold and hot air colliding with eachother. It's especially active when you're say in the middle of summer and a sudden cold front moves in from somewhere and brings the temps down into the 70's over a few hours period. You should be on the lookout for distant stations above 30 mhz.
