This thread is in remembrance of all individuals, both sworn and civilian, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the attack on America 10 years ago.

If your local agency has plans for radio silence on Sunday AM feel free to list the info
below. Mike Legeros has a list of NC Memorial Events on his Raleigh/Wake FF Blog.

If you feel like sharing your story on what happened that day and how you were affected you are welcome to do so. And thank you for sharing your feelings.

HOWEVER: I will not allow partisan political diatribes in this thread. You have been warned in advance. Please, out of respect for all affected by the tragic events a decade ago, keep political snipes to yourself. I will delete posts that are overtly political in nature. This is your only warning. Thank you.

My story from 10 years ago...at the time I was working as a Producer/Traffic Reporter in the Raleigh Metronetworks/Westwood One Bureau.

I had just finished taping my last traffic report in the studio at work...we had a TV in the studio and it was turned to ABC...Good Morning America was on but the volume was turned down...The hosts of GMA were joking around and having a good time when all of the sudden the 1st pictures were broadcast live just seconds after the first plane hit....no one knew yet what had happened...my first thought was "Damn, that is one heck of a fire in that building"...I called everyone else into my part of the studio and we watched in horror as the second plane hit...we were speechless...I stayed around a little longer at work and watched the images unfold on tv...I then left work and headed towards the police department in the town I lived in just south of Raleigh...my roommate and several of my friends are police officers and I wanted to see how they were doing...Me, my roommate and a couple other cops sat in the police department in a daze just trying to sort everything out...no calls came over the local police radio for a few hours as everyone was somewhere watching tv. It was very scary monitoring Raleigh PD Citywide Dispatch and not hearing any radio traffic.

Here in Franklin county we will be having several remembrance ceremonies.

At 8:46am, there will be a short service at Louisburg Fire Department, (the first plane hit at 8:46). Also, I believe there will be a moment of silence here too, not confirmed.

There will be several ceremonies on the Franklin County Courthouse steps throughout the day.

At 2pm, there will be a large memorial service. A moment of silence over Franklin County radios will occur sometime during this ceremony. (154.1450, 155.5800, 155.4300)

Ten Years Ago

Just got off from working the night shift at the police department. Sat down on the couch as my wife left for work and for some reason did not follow my normal routine of watching Sports Center on ESPN. As luck would have it my wife had the tv on GMA and I forgot to turn it before I headed into the kitchen to cook breakfast (or dinner since I was a third shifter). The breaking news was hardly believable and I remember thinking after the first plane hit that it had to be an accident. So I sat down to watch.

I was watching madly flipping between the news agencies and had stopped on CBS when the second plane hit. Talk about a momentary cold chill, It was at that point that I knew it was not an accident but refused to believe it. I called in to the PD to see if they were aware and the chief happened to answer the phone. He and the dispatcher were watching it on the tv in dispatch.

It never crossed my mind that the buildings would come down. I thought that it was going to be an incredible rescue mission for those guys in NYC. Then the first tower collapsed. I called my wife on her cell phone.

I watched the coverage until it was time to report to work that evening and was working dispatch that night. I watched the coverage all night and until I basically passed out on the couch at home around 3pm on the 12th. The eerie sound of those firefighter's movement beacons in every shot anywhere near the towers is still vivid in my mind to this day. I remember the law enforcement, port authority, firemen, and ems personnel running toward the scene as everyone else ran away, doing their job, but becoming heroes that day.

God bless everyone that lost their lives that day.

What an awesome picture. Thank you for sharing. I am from Colorado and after that day I firmly believe we must protect us all. I will stand, I will never forget. God Bless them all.

i live in Stafford, Va...i remember waking up to my alarm clock which was on a news station and hearing about the 1st plane, so i went to my parents bedroom to turn on the tv and watched in awe as the 2nd plane hit...i then left to goto work i was only there for an hour before we closed for the day...i then went to my fire station where i volunteered at, and we were moved up to cover Prince William county...i felt horrible not only for my brother fire fighters and 1st responders who lost their lives, but also all the innocent civilians who lost their lives..on September 12 we had a call for a girl that got trampled on by cows, i remember that Air Care had to get special permission to come fly out this lady, it didnt seem real....this is 10 yrs later we are America, We Will NEVER Forget, we are united as a nation, we proved we can overcome great loss and sacrifice and continue to live our lifes and grow stronger...God Bless America and everyone doing their part to keeping our dreams alive.

I was sitting in the chair at the barber shop here in Salisbury when someone came in to tell us what happened. About the time we changed the channel on the TV my pager & Nextel started going off. The hours & days that followed were, well, I don't know the words.

I remember the security measures that were put in place at the FD as well.......... Bay doors only went up if an apparatus was going to a call or returning from one, no training outside, all exterior doors were to remained locked at all times, if we went outside it was no less than 2, we had to start wearing our ID badges, pagers, radios & cell phones were to remain on 24/7, etc.

Though I am not as active as I once was I still pray for all of our public safety personnel and soldiers every night. God bless those that have gone before us, those that continue to serve today, and those that will fearlessly mount that rig not knowing that they will be answering their last alarm.
