Yesterday my new 996 stopped functioning. No trauma was inflicted on the scanner (before or after), this just started spontaneously. It worked flawlessly prior to this failure.

The scanner was unplugged and moved to another outlet in my room, then turned on. The two opening screens (996 info and copyright, etc) came up, but then nothing-it stays on the copyright screen only--no audio, no other screen activity, no response to any of the buttons. I tried reprogramming it with the computer, but the scnner will not communicate with the computer. Is there a way to do a reset, or any other suggestions? Is it just time to pack it up and send it back to Uniden?

Thanks.

While pressing 2, 9, and HOLD at the same time, turn on power.

That did it; thanks.

BTW, does anyone know why the radio locked up like it did? Is it prone to this type of failure?

Yes, definitely did urn it off first. Someone told me that some of these have bad power supplies that result in voltage spikes. Could that be it?
