I totally agree with rdale.....I've been using Gibson Ridge products (http://www.grlevelx.com) for two years and through too many tornado watches. I tried the others, including the recent 'upgrade' of WeatherTap to HD and, still, I found GR to be #1.

It's nice but MUCH more expensive and the radar data isn't as detailed.

Is this in reference to the Baron software? Seems as though the Baron software is what the tv stations use. Figured it had to be decent..haha but then again, who knows. How does the grlevelx software work? Do you get a login and password and log in via a website? Do you download software and pay one time? With weather tap, you login via the website. Just curious how some of the others work.

Thanks for the quick response and feedback. I know I dug this thread up from the bottom but was getting back into the weather stuff and I am looking to get some good information about storms and some good radar images.

While on the topic, any programs/software out there that provides you with instant storm warnings? I know there used to be an EMWIN engine (Weathernode I believe) that you ran on your pc and you could set up what types of alerts and warnings you wanted to hear about. The alerts would arrive just about as fast as the NWS broadcasted the alert. You could also set an alarm and have the warning automatically printed on your printer. You would pick a county and select what types of weather events you wanted to be alerted for. I saw something on the Storm Lab website called Interwarn. This seems to be the closest thing to it.

It looks as if the grlevelx program is a one time fee while the allisonhouse program is a yearly, steep fee. As I am far from being a professional, I enjoy looking at the radar images and getting close up to see how a storm is developing, progressing, etc. Not to mention that I am getting married at the end of the year and a steep purchase could create problems at this juncture... lol thanks for the links.

AllisonHouse is an add-on to GRLevelX, if you want the additonal products (like surface conditions, lightning, etc.) you can tack that on monthly or annually.

rdale,

Slightly off-topic......

Will GEMPAK run on older laptops, say a Pentium 3, and in dual-boot mode?

GRLevel3 can use all the data free from the NWS and requires no monthly subscription costs. It is a top knotch product and there are many add on that are also free such as the spotter network or wtach boxes and even MDs can be shown.

Also, GR products have been seen and are used in NWS offices so they do beleive in the quaility of the product.

If you chase, you can use a GPS to track your location too which is very cool if you have live data from a wireless service.

Let me also add that it can be a great learning/teaching tool. You can chase storms from the comfort of your home that are states away and you can also download for free old data from the NWS to recount old storms. I did one recently that hit my hometown a couple of years ago. It was great to see the radar data years later. Click Here

Can anyone refer me to a good forum in an effort to help me better understand how to read radar images and determine what is taking place? I am looking to be able to understand what is happening in a radar/satellite image and just become more knowledgable in understanding what I am looking at. I thought I had a decent understanding but I dont feel that I truely do.

I have been thinking about purchasing Grlevelx software but I dont want to not be able to understand it. I have used Weather Tap and love the close up views with the new HD radar images but i know Grlevelx is a great piece of software. I dont want to waste my money and not have a clue what I'm looking at. So if anyone can refere me to a forum that will help me better understand weather images and what is going on, i would appreciate it.

Thanks!

The GR owners forum is a good place to start. You can also do some Google seaching to find out what some of the weather terms mean when you want to more.

Finally, Stormtrack seems to be a great place for chases and you can follow along with the NOW threads and see what people are saying/reporting and compare to what you see. This has been helpful to me to understand what things are happening even when I cannot see the actual weather event.

Very good, thank you. I want to be able to interpret what I'm seeing. I want to see surface temps before the storm arrives, plus interpret wind events via the tools available to non-professionals. I think you get my drift. I will definitely check that site out.

Well I finally downloaded the trial version of Grlevelx3 and I have to say, it is quite intense. I cannot say I have any clue what any of it means but I suppose I better start reading up. The other software I've used seems more idiot-proof and puts everything right in front of you. This is the real deal stuff.

Are there ways to integrate overlays on trial versions? Where could I find overlays?

$10/mo is a steep fee?? For everything you get for that, it's well worth it. No one else will give you lightning data in addition to radar and all the other placefiles.

I clearly misread their site. As "froogle" as I am, $10/mo is a walk in the park. Thanks for pointing out my obvious oversight.
