• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I’ll add to the above out in the countryside advice: pre-dawn, and near river or sea ports. Inland rail container ports. Major grain elevators. New warehouse districts within 10-miles of major truck stop chain locations.

Those are permanent. There are also temporary:

Highway construction, major wrecks, bad weather.

Use a map in order to chart air miles.

There’ll come a point you’ll “know” how far away is RX you’re receiving.

FWIW, I stay with 7’ antennas on my pickup. 13’ clearance isn’t a problem and performance is improved.

Most guys might consider that only for road trips. Thats when one wants true greatest distance.

got my first contact in 33 years today!
I went grocery shopping and thought before I came home I would look at my CB.... ( as my ice cream melted) I was in a pretty big parking lot but it had tons of light poles... but i'm just playing... I did the SWR again still over 2... and kept having a hard time getting the needle to move on the dosy meter... I finally found if I shake my mike cord it works.... so I may get a new one later... I also kept keying the mike to see if the CB meter moved.... it did if I talked into the mic.... it was on MOD ... I pushed the MOD button and now when I transmit it moves to the end of the meter.... side band still seems off I'll look at that later..... I put it on 19 and could hear VERY faint signals... did that on a few channels and could just about hear people.... I listened to 19 for a few minutes... as I have at my house on handheld CB with 51" antenna's for months... and never hear anything!!!!.... so for the heck of it I asked for a radio check... and pretty far off I heard it's working driver???? I said thanks and he said welcome.....wow... just when you think no one has a CB anymore..... so I drove the 8 miles home listening and it just got quieter and quieter... I live 6 miles deep in heavy woods. and hear nothing here. anyway I'm still smiling about getting a contact ha ha

I was grateful yesterday to find nice cool 92F conditions . . . that was 18F cooler than my place of departure.

.

It's currently 67ºf in my back yard. The wind is blowing in off the ocean. Fog is visible on the horizon, so it'll be much cooler here in another hour or two.

I spent quite a bit of time working in the desert southwest, parts of Texas, New Jersey, Washington state and Alaska. I've found my happy places and they are all near the ocean.

I'm 8 miles from the beach and it's still hot here.... hot to me is the 90's ........ I learned more stuff from this hobby..... I want to do some range tests from the mobile to the base and the handhelds to the base.... I was wondering how to measure... so I went to google maps just now right clicked..... dragged a line from my house to the ocean and found 8. 8 miles.... pretty nifty!

Google Earth has some good tools that will do that. It'll even show you the elevation profiles between two points. I often use it for quick and dirty line of site determination for point to point network links.

In the same vein I can set my GARMIN GPS to a location and then read the air miles.

I pretty well know — from home — which of four (4) Interstate highways I’m hearing based on radio checks the accurate distance.

(Conditions apply, etc., which of those I might hear, when. It’s not always a matter of shortest distance.)

In a radio check, ask the respondent for his 10-20 (and give yours). Tell him you just installed this radio and trying to see if it works okay.

Others may join in. I’d say, “Hand, I got you at mile marker 363 just fine”, sort of response.

Still more may join in to find out how theirs are doing.

East Coast gets the humidity, which kills me. Here on the west coast we tend to have lower humidity. Spent some time in New Jersey and visited Massachusetts a few times in the summer. Never got accustomed to the humidity.
