• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

if your Firestik works good for you, and you get great range, that's awesome. if you ever do decide to try something different my antenna bends to allow me to go in and out of my garage with no problems.. once the I shut the garage door the antenna can stand up straight, so it is not always held at a bent position.... most garages are not as tall as mine.... but I would think once you shut the door the antenna wouldn't be bent at such a terrible angle that would cause damage to your antenna.
so for fun someday, try one and see what a difference having an antenna in the middle of the roof will do for you.... I think it would be a huge difference having a large ground plane of the trucks roof... and if you look at the radiation pattern I posted you will see having it mounted on the bumper will mostly allow you to transmit and receive signals out towards a 45 degree angle from the front of your truck... meaning if you're on the highway you will be transmitting and receiving towards the woods instead of up ahead.. or warning people behind you.
anyway just food for thought, enjoy the hobby

Yeah. I just love it when someone twists my words around to fit their narrative. Much like how the media took DJT’s words and made us think that he said we should drink bleach to get rid of covid.

Heh I HAVE NO IDEA IF IT DOES YET. :-D We will see. How does one determine "range?" I'd think you have to have a willing participant receiving and you drive away (???) I'm looking at local group meetings, might go to one next week and feel things out.

if you ever do decide to try something different my antenna bends to allow me to go in and out of my garage with no problems.

I cringe just at seeing it drag across the rubber door seal in your pics, you're not concerned it's going to slice up the seal? I looked at them, and some roof mounts have springs to assist so we'll see. I totally get the ground plane. I'm going to drive it around for a while as is and will consider a better one later. Heck, I might go full 102" whip with a quick release. BTW it's rear driver's bumper, so I guess it's mostly going to people in the opposite lane. :-D

Anyway we're drifting topic again, as you were!

Not difficult to tweak your tail?

It was funny.

Your “serious” comeback (post previous) just as much.

Rewards for the diligent readers.

If your responding to the black tape thing I have WSAC829 on ignore so sadly I missed whatever your referring to

Too bad. I had it down to being sly.
Gave me a laugh.

Both y’all kinda touchy.

Guess the rest of us need to chip in GoFundMe and get a pair of Fatboy amps talking shi . . ah, Skip to each other.

As to COBRA 29, just rig some internal LEDs and use as doorbell light show.

I’ve given away or traded every one that’s come my way.

No amp for me, I'll just put him back on block so he can't see what I've posted again .... It was a nice quiet month .. but the black tape comment, I just had to take him off block for a couple posts

Seriously? That’s not how it works….. You can’t see my posts if you ignore me, but i can still see yours. *face palm*
Also, learn to read and comprehend entire posts before firing back at somebody. Not just what you want to see.

I really don't care. Dudes been salty since i joined here. (and not just with me either)
I hope i annoy him enough with my wisdom that he rage quits.

I think you’ve misread/misunderstood pretty often, in that case. I wouldn’t cite “wisdom”, therefore. “Info” or “knowledge” might cover it.

I tend to appreciate contributors based on helpfulness. Attempts well-meaning (may miss mark) to detailed experience via break-outs, images and videos.

On that score he’s pretty high. Has his neighbors involved in his handheld radio quests; has several videos from base station install to radio range tests; to demos of Skip as a phenomenon long past dark, etc. Help to contributors here on the dreaded Jeep Wrangler, etc.

Is enjoying problem-solving in retirement from work.

Sitting in the radio cave isn’t the same thing as sticking one’s neck out to try to help others. If you don’t like Yankees stay out of New England. They’re plain-spoken.

From a man who’s helpful versus the one who’s vengeful . . . readers know what side of things is worthy. What did you just say about yourself?

Ignore
the irritants. Drive on.

Retirement is different. Not what I expected. Give yours a chance. Expertise — if genuine — it’s been my experience men are proud to pass it along. Show the examples. Model them for others.

Put the energy to good use. Lord knows that 11M can use more good examples of how to.

I was coming back on IH-20 late today and a driver was wondering aloud about, where’s all the hands with them fancy radios? I wasn’t up to sweet-talking him into letting me help him with his bad-sounding, but LOUD, example (echo, mic gain, talkback). Muddy as hell.

Consider that as metaphor.

Yeah. Doesn't help it's winter here. Couped up in the house too long. Once spring hits it's motorcycle rides, fishing, camping, touring the world, etc as my wife will also be retired in June (when the sale of our business is finalized). I won't be in the man cave much at that point.

Same here, and i have contributed if you look at 98% of my posts. Same as him. I post what i post. Some find what i post useful. Some don't. He's crapped on a few of my posts. So i crapped back. If one can't take it, don't dish it. Pretty simple. Anyway.... i'm over it.

That was supposed to a joke. Lol.

......and now back to our regularly scheduled programming....

Toss a Citizen Band project in somewhere. Don’t let that “working knowledge” get lost.

How about radio in general? My buddy goes to auctions and buys up storage shed contents and the like. In one of his units was THOUSANDS of "taken out of service" commercial UHF/VHF equipment (mobile and handheld). Mostly Kenwood, Motorola, Vertex and EF Johnson. We are in the process of sorting it all out and testing it all. It's been a long slow process and we haven't even made a dent yet. After we pick through it and keep what we want we plan on setting up some tables at local ham fests. Whatever is left after that is heading to eBay, marketplace, etc.
