Academy Bus frequencies

I know that they are based in NJ. Does anybody know what type of system they use? and what are the frequencies? thanks.

However I want to know if anybody has been able to listen in from outside NJ. I am in Queens, about 3 miles east of Manhattan.

As noted in a previous post, Academy Bus Lines uses the NJTransit trunked radio system. Considering the closest transmitter to your location is West Orange, NJ, you may have some difficulty hearing the transmissions unless an external antenna is used.

The Talkgroup data shown on the NJTransit North & South pages is woefully inaccurate and needs a complete overhaul. For Academy, current talkgroups are:

Central & Northern New Jersey
24864 & 24880 Perth Amboy garage. Used for Rutgers University Campus transportation.
402-02 Hoboken garage. Used for NJTransit Bergen County routes operated under contract.
500-04 through 500-07 Leonardo garage. Used for NYC commuter routes and charters.
501-00 through 501-05 Toms River garage. Same use as Leonardo.

Southern New Jersey
508-04 through 508-07 Pomona & Westampton garages. Used by buses traveling through South Jersey.

Additionally, there are two frequencies licensed to Academy: 854.6625 (PL 77.0) & 859.7875. The 854 frequency has a transmitter on top of the Empire State Building and is used primarily for charter moves in NYC and also for the NJTransit Middlesex County routes operated under contract (based at Perth Amboy). You should be able to hear those transmissions.

The radios in Academy buses are equipped with both the NJTransit trunked system and the two conventional frequencies giving them the capability to operate anywhere within the state and maintain communications with the home garage. Also the descriptions given for operational use are interchangeable between systems. For example a run from NYC to Atlantic City may start on the 854 frequency and then switch to the NJTransit North & South system depending on location.

From what I have been hearing over the last couple of weeks, it looks like the Transit Police maybe be moving from Type 1 to Type 2 talkgroups finally. I'll update soon as I know more.

Another nice VHF high band system dies a slow death AKA The Dover Twp Police 155.655 PL 114.8 stay alert / stay alive, Heard that system back in the day in the Newark Area dead full quieting. Now there lucky to talk out to the township line, a damn shame. Nice going Mike !!

Notes:
Coach USA Red & Tan Lines/Rockland Coaches buses were initially equipped with radios, however when the 5000 & 6000 series buses were replaced with current 7000 & 8000 series, the radios were not installed.

The Red Cross talkgroups shown in the database were used during the early 1990's, however I have not heard these talkgroups since 1995. I don't believe they are being used.

The database shows a service called Midtown Direct Lite Rail. There has never been a service with that name. Midtown Direct is the marketing name given to heavy rail trips operating from Penn Station New York to points on the Morris & Essex Lines and Montclair/Boonton line.

Leisure Line has been out of business for nearly 10 years.

I am trying to program my 996xt scanner with the NJ Trainsit system, I have the system set up in type 2 mode and I am reciveing the system and I can program the DEC talk group IDs but it won't take the HEX talk ID's such as 101-01, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong even if I select HEX it will not take the HEX ID. Thanks for any help on this.

The only talkgroup that TransCom has access to is A.L.E.R.T. on the New York City 800 MHz trunked radio system.

54784 is Meadowlands Maintenance Center Security. I don't have anything for 501-1, but I would guess it's another Academy Line Talkgroup.
