Thats a pretty stern warning = does the building conduct a lot of power or were they insinuating that you might be shot on sight?

It means that if you knock the site off the air, an airplane could crash.

Nope it just because OTS and the facility monitoring it usually PASS at an ARTCC will notify others and NOTAMs will be issued. Aircraft can't crash if one fails or gets destroyed hehe

But if one were a few degrees off?

I think the sign is a bit overstated, but I am sure all three cases are covered.

1) you could be electrocuted
2) if you happen to get the wrong officer responding on the wrong day in the wrong mood, you could get shot.
3) an aircraft accident could occur.

The sign is most certainly overstated. But the fact is, these navaids are critical. If one fails at a critical stage of flight, a pilot could become disoriented and fly a dead needle into the side of a mountain.

Yes, they have back up generators.

The little bars are sense antennas. There is a rotating antenna inside the “bowling pin” and also a fixed antenna fed from a phase modulated source. I forget the exact workings but the aircraft receiver can tell which compass radial its on when approaching the site by measuring the phase relationship of the rotating antenna to the fixed antenna with modulated signal. The sense antennas provide internal feedback for the system. There should be someone out here with specific experience with these, I only had a tour of one a long time ago.

Prcguy,
I thought that's what they could be but I wasn't sure. Indeed, I remember the rotating and fixed antenna setup and as you say, the receivers do a phase detection to determine the radial they are tuned to. I just wasn't completely sure about the sense/feedback antennas you mentioned. It would be interesting to know just what they are sensing though... :) Thanks for the info.
Later...
