A BackRack is fine for antennas that do not require a ground plane, such as 1/2w or 5/8w antennas. Of course performance would be better with a ground plane, but it is not a show stopper for some antennas.

For instance, I use a Comet hammy antenna on a hatch mount that is ground plane independent and it works fabulously for where it's mounted.

5/8th's wave antennas do require a ground plane.

Yeah, 1/2 wave on a headache rack is a solution that I see a lot in logging country. Easy quick install for those that don't have the right tools to do a permanent install.

You could look for a stake pocket mount… then you’re at top of the bed level, so basically at hood level… I’m not sure anyone makes an nmo stake pocket mount, but definitely 3/8”…
