I'd also recommend the National Radio Club's (NRC) e-mail forums. Subscribers will sometimes send out an "alert" when they are hearing an AM station not heard at their location ... such as nightime stations still running daytime power or antenna patterns, stations doing testing, and stations located outside North America that are being heard here.

The club is a great place for learning more about AM DXing and the art of QSLing, making effective dxing antennas at minimal cost, and about the history of AM radio and radio stations (alot of AM radio history occurred within a few miles of your location, PGMAN89).

I have been picking up a lot of the same AM stations here in Connecticut... however not on a SWL radio, rather on the AM radio in my Grand Caravan. What a hoot!

870 WWL NEW ORLEANS is just down the road from me (so to speak) about an hour drive down I-10 from my house. I was just curious how strong are you picking it up?

pretty clear some nights and others not even at all. my jaw dropped to the ground on saturday I heard 810 kgo san francisco CA for about 30 seconds enough to get the callsign i never heard ut after that again that was very amazing

Are you using any type of external antenna or just what's built into the radio? I can usually pick up 700 WLW from the car in the evening driving to work and that's on I-10 in Biloxi MS. on the gulf coast. Like 5 miles north of the gulf of mexico. It usually comes in good enough to listen to, but I find it more enjoyable on XM.

I'm just trying to listen to at least 1 station in every state from 1 location. Hawaii is my hardest and still waiting. Otherwise, been there done that....

Do they all QSL?? fire off a letter to 'em & see if they respond...Or, do they still do that?

I've had good luck with letters back from the stations. Some just fire out a letter on station letterhead while others provide a coverage map and bumper stickers. I've really had only one station that wouldn't respond, but I found another station for the state.

I always provide a letter telling them what I am doing, location, and SINPO; postage with stamps, maybe a buck or two for the hard state, AND I send them a QSL card for their reception.

For those who want a challenge, this is just one of them in radio. It's also fun on the ham side.

Mentioning a SINPO code to a MW station might prove to be very confusing, unless you explain what that means. It may very well be better - particularly to the smaller stations - to describe the signal quality in words, rather than abbreviations. But yes, from old friends of mine that do MW DX, many stations do verify. In fact, I used to know several techs who also were hams. Not too surprising, that.
