Morning everyone,

This morning around 5 AM EST I was playing around on the AM broadcast band and came across a station I cant ID. It was on 1670 khz.I used Radio Locator and nothing on there for 2500 miles seems to fit the broadcast. To me it sounded like French which made me believe it was from Canada. I did and frquency check with the FCC and again I found 1 station it could be but when i went to the website it had LISTEN LIVE and it wasnt the same program. The program sounded very child like with children singing.and to be honest im not even sure it was french. I made a recording on my Winradio and I need to find a way to make it an MPS or just replay the recording and post it on Youtube. where do we find listings for MW thats outside the country?

Great catch there! That one is still needed here, but I don't expect to hear it anytime soon as my BOGs are deaf to the South due to their east-west orientation which I'm pretty much stuck with.

You know, I was looking at that map on the video and noticed that the distance to US VI is about the same as Guatemala and Nicaragua which suggests that those countries should be audible as well. Just need to find the most likely targets and keep an ear out for proper conditions.

This site is a must for any serious medium wave DX, it's the only one I ever use for domestic stations:

Canada/US AM Station Info Lookup Page

Just pick your frequency and narrow your search by format (Spanish, French, Religious, News, etc.) It really helps in narrowing down what you think you might be hearing. The "fuzzy" call letter search has proved helpful many times too, not to mention the "network/slogan" info listed for each station. I find the data to usually be up to date as well, and if not then the author of the site (an active DXer himself) is quick to revise it if you come across any discrepancies. The site also offers a distance calculator and station sunrise/sunset times - also valuable when targeting your DX.

Nicaragua has been reported recently on both 540 and 720. During auroral conditions I've detected the offset carrier on 540 (it's very high and really stands out on the SDR's waterfall display, but I don't remember the exact offset atm) During auroral conditions and a very directional antenna, it might be possible to hear both from our area but dodging WGN might be difficult.

Guatemala has been reported on 690, but not nearly as often.

Hmmm. Yeah, 720 is meter pinning here in Milwaukee and in direct line with Nicaragua. 540 is possible if I phase out semi-local WAUK. Guatemala would be a good choice for me.

Speaking of 720, WGN ... I was listening to them in the car the other morning around 9am when they suddenly changed antenna patterns, or went to a standby transmitter or something ... their signal went out for 1/2 second, then were noticeably weaker. I switched over to 710 and found that WGNs digital IBOC slop was gone and could hear what sounded like 3 stations. Never did get an ID, but may have been a good opportunity to log a new one had I had the time to listen longer (or set up a recording). Always keep your ears open, you never know what you might hear!

There was a scheduled outage of the Chicago stations on 670, 720 & 780 khz back on March 10th. The outage lasted a couple of hours and I was hoping to bag Nicaragua on 720, but it didn't happen. These BOGs are far too directional, and as such, I logged a bunch of new Mexican stations during the Chicago outage. I captured the whole event with the Perseus, recording from 620 to 820 khz. I can't remember the last time all three of these big guns were off the air. Well it's now preserved thanks to the SDR recording :)

Nice.

They had a similar down time a number of years ago that I recorded. Still have it burned on CD somewhere. Came up with nothing as well, but just having the opportunity is great.

I'm dying to get my R-71a going again. Need to recap it. Have all the parts (kit from Ebay), just have to do it. That one is modified to the hilt and runs on 12 volts, so when it's going, I'm heading out camping with a BIG spool of wire!

Sweet. I've been so busy with non-radio stuff to even think about DX tests. They are lots of fun though! Love 'em.
