I just spent a week in Walton, Kentucky and tried to access/listen to traffic on repeaters in the general area. I heard one 30 second burb on 146.79, nothing else! I preprogrammed my HT with frequencies (and tones) for the area repeaters and crossed reference them with online repeater book, ARRL, and the Repeater Map book.
My question is are 144 and 440 repeaters being used and if they are what are the most popular frequencies?

That's definitely the stix by the 71/75 split. Terrain in the populated region of Northern Kentucky / Ohio valley slopes towards the river, so even up high, it's going to cover north to Cincinnati best. Probably some interesting aircraft traffic or maybe even some CB (urg) radio. Some of the hollars are probably more successful with HF rigs.

Thank you for your reply....that's what I was afraid of. Here in North central NC I am not use to that problem. Repeaters (both analog and DMR) are plentiful and a large number of hams use HT's to access them.
