Heard of it? yup.

I think there is an option with some radios to do "private talk" between dispatch and that unit only.

What happens more often is someone in the ambulance picks up a mobile cell phone and calls dispatch.. ;)

A Private Call is a person who has called the ambulance company directly and not called 9-1-1. Usually this is a facility that has a contract with that ambulance company. Sometimes the caller just prefers that company.

"Private Call" in the telecommunications world is Motorola's version of CTCSS as they marketed it on their radios.

isnt private calll on motorola systems just an "i-call"? (it could mean other things even to phone them).

ensure your PC is set up for i-call's or icall wild card to hear the i-call (if thats what it actually is)

Things are a lot different up here than in the US.

There are no "private ambulances" in Ontario. If you want an ambulance, 911 is the only way to get one.

"Private Call" isn't what Motorola calls CTCSS. That is "Private Line".

A "Private Call" is a trunking term to mean two radios are communicating with each other, as opposed to on a talkgroup. In this case, the Ambulance dispatcher is communicating directly with an ambulance in private.

Mike has it correct, the Private Call is the dispatch centre initiating the trunking version of the Private Call (the button is labelled that on the screen) to communicate directly with the unit. Some dispatch centres use it, some don't. In Muskoka they used to use it quite a bit, but that seems to have trailed off.

Back when I had my older Pro-2052 scanning Fleetnet, I was able to listen to the Private Calls as they would come up as a talkgroup when you were "searching", but I'm not sure if the newer stuff still does that (as we generally enter in the talkgroups we want to hear and scan.

Yes, a Motorola Private Call is the same as an I-Call.

It can be conventional or trunked and it's fully monitorable unless encryption is used.

I heard Lindsay CACC use it once to discuss an administrative matter with a crew member on an ambulance.

Other then that one time, I've seldom heard it used.

Probably because the unit involved in the Private Call wasn't on the Campbellford tower.

No need to broadcast it on towers that don't need to carry it. It would only be carried on the tower the unit was affiliated to.
