It is output from the serial port. (While not impossible, I suppose it would be very difficult to follow all this on the unit's screen.)

That is what made the most sense to me. I was just second guessing after reading the thread (not sure if it was even on RR) where they were debating the issue. Thanks for the clarification.

Why does this radio still utilize a serial port? It is 2009, get with the times and use USB. Even Motorola uses USB now!

Most computers sold today don't even have a serial port.

1) Cost
2) RFI
3) Compatibility with GPS
4) Ability to use a simple interface (for other controllers such as remote head)

(to name a few)

OK Here's a question that just occured to me. What will be included in the box? You will need two different cables to hook up to a serial-port and to a gps because of the male/female thing, right? Or will consumers have to buy a null modem or something?

Upman,

Thats what I'm wanting to know. Is the BCD996T the final model for a few years to come or is UNIDEN releasing another one to replace/update it. I'm needing to know because I want to purchase another one but don't know if I should wait if theres another one coming out soon.

Never go into an auto repair shop, and state "I think there is something wrong with my car".

This thread is about the BC346xt/BCD396xt.
When and If Uniden is ready to announce a replacement for the 996 you will see a thread devoted to that topic.

I apologize if you don't like the answer but I gave the same answer Paul (UPMan) has given in the past to this same exact question.

Unless you have something positive to contribute, for example, information that is relative to what the person is asking, then I don't know why you feel the need to respond with anything. Try to be nice.

Mike, Uniden doesn't announce future models until they are about six months out from release. I'm as eager as you to know whats down the pike, but I'm sure Uniden is spending all the current resources on the BC346XT and BCD396XT at the moment.

Don't forget that Uniden also has firmware upgrades for features that can be incorporated into current models with compatible hardware too. The 996 would be hard to replace at the moment. Look how long the 296 and 796 were on the market.

Thank you but I wasn't the one who posed this question. I was just responding to the jerky response to the person who was.

A lot of companies withold releasing info on new and upcoming gadgets simply because they can lose the sales on the current models, and provide some advantage to their competitors.

Just think what would happen if someone did leak out a new Uniden mobile scanner 1000 times more advance than the 996T and 1/3rd less in price. Wow, you'd see ebay and RR for sale forum light up with used 996Ts by the minute. That would hurt the sales of new 996T's for sure...and so on...like falling dominos.

Just look at how many used 396's are listed in the for sale forum on a weekley basis in anticipation of the new model, and I'm sure the new 396's are hurting for sales too.

No, I guess I should have said Michael, not Mike, No big deal, just that the thread is actually about the release of the BC346XT and BCD396XT. Universal Decoder covered that.

I like the idea of all the current features on the DMA scanners that are already available and now new and improved features without the loss of the same accessories (i.e. carry cases, RH-96, Software, etc.) and small form factor.

Since no information is being released on the release date I'll render a educated guess.
BC346 = Feb
BC396xt = March

Ces 2009

Hello all,
Has anyone gone to the CES 2009 show? If so, was UNIDEN there with their new models BCD396XT and BC346XT? Did they demo the products? Any end user thoughts? Likes? Dislikes? Announcement on release to public?????
