A SWAT team has surrounded a home in Longmont where they fear a woman is being held hostage by a man with a violent criminal record.

Sgt. Tim Lewis of the Longmont Police Department would not identify the man or woman, but said the woman had a restraining order against the man.

"He's not supposed to be there, and we don't know yet why he is" there, Lewis said by phone while the standoff was ongoing.

Neighbors called police to the home at 9 Sherman Court about 9 a.m. when they heard loud, possibly violent quarreling inside the home.

When police arrived the woman would not come to the door, and the man could be seen inside but would not come to the door.

"The woman has always been cooperative with law enforcement in the past" during previous domestic-violence calls to the home, Lewis said.

The man has a history of violence, including domestic violence and weapons charges, Lewis said.

About 35 SWAT officers and Boulder County sheriff's deputies have evacuated neighbors and have surrounded the home.

"We'll be here as long as it takes to bring him into custody," Lewis said about 2 p.m.
