"Albany is following an encryption trend in Georgia, perhaps the entire country, said Frank Rotundo, executive director of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.
#"Many police departments in Georgia are going to encryption," Rotundo said. "It is about the safety of officers."
#Albany City Commission recognized the need for the encryption and approved the funding from the one-penny sales tax fund.
#"I voted for it. I am for anything that serves to help police safety and the fight against crime," said Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard. "I don't want criminals to hear what police are doing."
Wow, with statements like this coming from the GA Association of Police chiefs, it must be cause for celebration at Schaumburg HQ of Solutions. 250K for an "encryption solution" paid for by a SPLOST. I'm sure the sucker citizens voted YES to keep those officers safe from those criminals who file into the local RadioShack en masse to pop for their Pro106s. Yeah right.
Notice the story says a burglar was caught not with a smartphone, but a "scanner hanging on his belt".
Yep, it's a growing trend alright- because many agencies don't want their traffic streamed, and Solutions wants to sell new radios and systems to customers who don't really need them. And we all pay for it.

Albany PD obviously has a lot to hide to spend that kind of money!
It's like the cops always say on those TV shows where they chase a suspect across a field into someones garden shed... "if you haven't done anything wrong, why are you hiding?"
Speaking of officer safety, wouldn't it be safer to hire more backup? That $250k could have hired more cops.
