I tested a number of different antennas, including a standard telescopic whip. I like that best, but it's not flexible enough to use portable. I had many ham type antennas to try. Some did surprising well on one band or the other, but I wanted an antenna that worked best on all bands. Many use the Diamond SRH77CA, and I tried that, but my 800 performance was not good enough, and I noticed some other frequency areas suffered as well. Works great on ham bands, but that was not the best for scanner bands in general.

Other than a 17.5" whip (my favorite), I found the Comet SMA24 to do a decent job on all bands (save low band...as expected for being much shorter than a quarter wave on low band), and pretty good on 800. It's also a "ham" antenna, but acts more like a straight whip. That is my go-to antenna when the stock antenna is just not enough, and a telescopic whip is too rigid for the environment I'm in.

BTW, the stock antenna was pretty good on all bands for being a short antenna. I didn't detect holes in frequency coverage. I still use it in close range.

Which frequencies and systems are you concerned with? ("All of them" is not an acceptable answer.)
