• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I too am looking for GMRS base antenna. The wife is not particularly keen on antennas going all over the roof or anything super tall. I think I can get away with a small antenna mounted to the back side of my metal fake chimney. I am looking at something like a Tram-Browning BR-6140 or Sirio CX 455 as they are about as tall as I think I can get away with, at around 26" tall. Any thoughts?

As long as you go in with realistic expectations (poor to mediocre performance) you're going to be fine. Don't expect miracles out of a 26" base antenna.

Mounting it in close proximity to a metal chimney is going to make it directional away from the chimney.

26" tall antenna can work well if you are not expecting huge gain numbers. It'll be fine for a low level antenna and for nearby repeaters.

Personally not impressed with anything from Tram/Browning. Cheap Chinese junk antennas. It'll probably work fine if your budget is really tight, but cutting corners on the antenna system is a rookie mistake. The antenna system is the most important part. I'd rather have a $200 antenna and a $50 radio than a $50 antenna and a $200 radio….

I do have a Sirio 5/8 wave VHF antenna that came with AIS receiver. So far it's done just fine.

Also, pay close attention to your coaxial cable. At UHF, you need to carefully consider feedline losses. You need to take into account the length of the cable and the losses involved. Also, proper waterproofing of outdoor connections is important. Don't forget grounding a lightning suppressor.

Just an update: I put up a tri-band Diamond V2000a (6m, 2m and 73cm) that turns out to have low VSWR in the GMRS freqs. I am very pleased as I wanted an antenna for the ham freqs but also wanted to be able to be able to use it for GMRS.

We had a guy running a commercial folded dipole array on 2m simplex ham in my general area.

This is not a promotion, is not scientific with measurables. Just a real world experience testimonial. The guy could be heard all over the area, could hear everybody well on what was obviously a phenomenal station. Best signal around. Folded dipole array is a flame thrower!
