To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Antenna for a Galaxy 952 DX base radio

I have three Galaxy 952 DX CBs with one being used as the base radio. I have been encouraged to drop my 5/8th wave, 22' ringo style antenna and buy a real mobile base antenna for a much greater range for broadcast/receive. A Little Wil antenna as been suggested several times. Do any serious CB radio ops have any advice on this?

Les Anderson - AKA SnowWalker

Admin or mod, can you make a correction for me. That should be a Galaxy 952 DX, Not a "952 DX"

For some reason this thing will not let me "change the radio model" in my original post. My radios are the Galaxy -959 DX- NOT 952 DX.

Sounds like you already have a good start on the antenna

Wilson base antenna became a MACO per one source

A few questions still outstanding:

Galaxy DX-959b pretty well my all-time favorite raduo . . so long as it’s matched up with an outboard DSP filter.

As you have three of these radios, swap it in at each location.

The problem of solar propagation being on the upswing for another year or so makes RX difficult.

Your current antenna when suitably modified and safely mounted is likely NOT in need of replacement after inspection & test.

— An antenna feedpoint choke and another coax filter at the radio end would be my first attempts.

— Being sure of no noise across the DC power would be included.

Here’s a “cheap” example at radio end.

SKU RFI-CB-MOBILE

I’m confused. So you want a good CB base antenna and you already have a 22ft 5/8 wave base antenna? And for base station use someone is recommending a Wilson Little Wil mag mount mobile antenna? For base use???

If so I think someone has been hitting the crack pipe a bit too much.
We have seven regulars on our CB channel and more I am hearing that I should try the Little Wil antenna for our roof top antenna. I just wanted to check with you folks to find out if I was missing something with my base set up. As previously posted, I live on the high side of a mountain with an unobstructed view to the east, south & southwest. That was the reason for my choosing the 22' Ringo Ring antenna to begin with. Others seem have a different point of view.

Get a Antron 99 for a great base station antenna. I have one of the older ones that’s tunable. Not sure if the new ones are.

The 22ft 5/8 he has now would be better than a 1/2 wave end fed Antron 99.

There were some unanswered questions about this antenna from old threads linked in Post #4.

I think (it may be that) today’s desire for better performance starts there.

Remove & inspect (repairs?), plus re-install at a higher standard if not already done. This is the open set of questions.

I usually ran my 959b with a KL203 (plus what’s in Post #5).
