I took some good advice and got the small 800 Mhz Laird base antenna mentioned in the thread below. It really exceeded my expectations, but do wonder what I could do with the 6db version--about 65 inches long. Since you already get some reception to the other town, the dedicated band antenna should give you good copy.

Im looking recomendations for a outdoor vertical antenna for 824-896 mhz range not to expensive and not too cheap with a good gain .I eas thinking about Laord FG8243 824-896mhz 3db omni antenna , is this a good one ? Thanks !

Oh well. There's plenty of uncivilized folks locally to keep things interesting for now.

Can you detect even a faint signal or faint control channel if it's a trunk system?
An outdoor directional antenna might be a solution. Definitely need to do some investigating before making the investment.
