Trouble is there E, 3.58MHz is well above the AM broadcast band, that's in the 80M Amateur band. You can't use a SW antenna with an active preselector on MW and expect to hear anything but leakage from a local broadcaster.

Correct, AM is deaf with AN-LP1, just pointing out that its still available and a good choice for SW IMO.

I have good results on AM with my Slect-A-Tenna/DX-398.

What is readily available today that provides frequency, call sign, and location information similar to what White's Radio Log provided?

The National Radio club publishes their logbook once a year, and although I'm not into MW DXing, I understand it's very detailed and well put together. I just checked the website, and they're sold out - perhaps if enough people requested it, they'd make a 2nd set of copies.

In addition to the NRC Logbook, there are a number of online resources. The FCC has a huge amount of information available at http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/amq.html. Radio Locator (http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/home) is quite good if you know the call sign or area of the station in question. This (http://www.topazdesigns.com/ambc/) is one I bookmarked but haven't used much. Good stuff here (http://www.amlogbook.com/) also.

Well it all depends

Well it all depends on what scanner you have. Many that I've seen "average" people use don't normally seem to have it unless you get one of those Uniden Scanner Clock Radio things, but I have a Uniden BR330T and it does AM and even FM but I swear the AM always seems to suck in my opinion and so does the SW, but still nice to have it.

The BR330T seems to do well on "regular" scanner stuff though.

I feel it's stupid that they marketed it for Nascar, because, it's basically a public safety scanner. I mean, I haven't heard of many races that used trunking systems or at least needed 2500 channels, LoL. I could be wrong though.

farthest I have heard from here in Idaho Falls Idaho at night is a radio station located in Michigan.

I look forward to sunset because on my commute home I often listen into Calgary radio, Seattle stations, Denver, LA...really quite amazing how many channels can be picked up at night.

I dont think anyone here is listening to AM radio on their scanner. Although this website/forum is primarily geared towards scanning the public safety bands, it is not exclusive to them. Many scanner enthusiests will talk about their other radio hobbies on here. Some like ham or CB. I don't, but I do like shortwave and mediumwave Dx (distance listening) and thats the topic here:)

Even the few scanners and widebands that "can" recieve AM, never really do it well. A decent SW/MW radio will pull in tons of good stuff that on a cold and clear winter evening will suprise you with what you can hear. (even better at dawn:cool: )

Back in the day, WLS was so great. Larry Lujack, Tommy Edwards, Bob Sirotte, Steve and Gary, John Landecker.....

Remember "Disco Demolition", "Animal Stories", the "Boogie Check"?

Man every word you said rang a bell! I grew up in Itasca and WLS was my older Sister's morning wakeup as we got ready for school! She would crank it so loud I would finally give in and put it on my clock radio and sort of have a 'simulcast' of "Dream Weaver" or "Last Train to Clarksville" or "Afternoon Delight" which Mom deemed as 'radio porn'..we had no idea why!!;)

Tops: Panasonic RF-2200 and RF-1150. No comparison... can't touch them at screwbay prices though. I was lucky and picked up a tech special that I fixed.
Weekend before last I did a shootout with my RF-2200, Sony ICF-S5W, and Kaito KA-2100 (same as Redsun RP-2100). It was a bit after noon when I started, sitting in the back yard to avoid interference from the house (which is pretty minimal anyway).

Long story short, the RF-2200 and the ICF-S5W ran neck and neck. I could tell no difference between the two on any of my tests. The KA-2100 was either just as good or half a step behind. On the adjacent channel interference tests I suspect the KA-2100 lost out a bit due to its 1kHz tuning step. Both of the other radios are analog, so they could be better off-tuned to avoid splatter and recover as much as possible of the desired signal. Of what's available new today, the KA-2100 seems to be the top of the heap among standard portables.

BTW, I've heard the 2100 is being discontinued in the US in any form other than the CCRadio-SW. Crane claimed they had an exclusive distribution agreement for this radio in the US, so it looks like that's finally coming into effect. If you were thinking of getting a KA-2100, now would probably be a good time since the Crane model is more expensive. They look to still be available directly from Kaito (www.kaitousa.com). Universal has them listed as "discontinued", with a link to the CCRadio-SW which they're now selling.

What was the timeframe for that log? Is that all one night?

Ever since the weather got warmer, my MW Dx has taken a dump.
