• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I get that, but why spend more for less? Makes no sense to me, but hey, if someone wants to throw money away that's their choice. That $50 saved could by a nice power mic, or be put towards an antenna.

PRESIDENT specs own components and other details. They’re not the same. The edge is with President.

Back to topic, the reviews for AT900 show a radio that’s more than it first appeared. (Details in video). Freeband among them.

Being able to easily modify RF Gain while on-road beats using a menu (button settings) for those interested in AM-only.

FM is a low value addition. RF Gain, isn’t.

Adding an RFX-95HD amp with its low-pass filter is maybe possible . . another point of existing familiarity.

I’m not interested, per se, but there are those who will be. Comparing it to QT-40 + KL-203 & 27/586 Low Pass will be that game. (NRC + clean Power).

QT60 or QT80 with CMC-130S-3K “level” is a hard sell to those who think they already “know” What is CB? in mobile as it’s existed the past 50-years.

Yeah.... they pretty much are the same. They are made in China just like every other radio these days. Basically you are paying for a familiar "name brand". Nothing more. Gone are the days of the President brand we grew up with. Only a few of the high end models are still made in Vietnam.

While i tend to agree with my liking of knobs over menus, the at500m/cb500 has a programmable "PF" button on the mic that can be set for RF gain (or many other options). You don't even have to take your hand off the mic to turn a knob. Just hit the PF button and use CH up/down buttons on mic to adjust on the fly.

Anyway, now that they dropped the price to $119.99 it's a much better deal. They'll sell. It's just too big for many of todays vehicles. That's where the at500m/cb500 shine, and still offer more than any comparable President radio at that price point and size. An example is the Bill II. It's way over priced for what it is.

Same manufacturer does not mean same exact radio. PRESIDENT has its own take on circuitry design and components plus overall quality. It’s not a rebadge as with AT and RadiOddity.

Will the cheaper ones last? PRESIDENT has skin in that end of things, the others don’t.

Value is not dimes and nickels.

Size is a problem idiosyncratic.

Desire is where it will play out.

The old Presidents are in a class of their own. The new Presidents... who knows. I can say there are plenty of people still running their original decade+ old AT-5555's. In other words... 10+ years on a budget radio seems pretty decent to me. Will they last 30, 40, 50+ years like the radio's of our youth? Doubt it, but neither will the current generation of Presidents.
