Thank you I have already been on that site but it does not say which lead to use but it seems like I can use my 8600 software.

This is the cable you need; however, Butel Software sometimes struggles with recognizing the cable and will blame the device driver that this cable automatically installs and tells you it can't open the port. Make sure you have the baud rate correctly set and it works best if the cable attaches to COM port 3 or 4. Any COM port above that, Butel will likely not find it. This is for Windows 10 computer, I haven't tried running Butel on a Windows 11 computer, because I don't own one.

One other very important thing - the cable MUST be plugged into a port on the computer, it is extremely unlikely BUTEL will recognize it if it is plugged into a USB Hub or a USB port on a monitor (which is basically a USB Hub). The software was originally written around 2000 and was last updated in 2012, so it doesn't understand some of the latest things on Windows 10 and new computers.

My data cable is plugged into the port on my laptop and it is connected via COM port 4 and I have not needed a driver as Windows recognised the cable

Sounds like you are in business to be able to use the Butel Software to program your receiver. Make sure the receiver is set to baud rate 9600 because that is what the software requires to communicate with the receiver.

It's likely that ARC8600 reads the radio ID...in which case it's also likley it won't work with your AR8200 (how else could he sell you two pieces of pretty much identical software?).

I use the Butel Software and it works with both the 8200 and 8600. In fact, when you start the program, it says it supports both models.

The cable you use for the 8600 is needed to program the 8200 because the cable that attaches to the 8200 has a DB9 plug at the other end that is the same female DB9 that is built into the 8600.

There are two versions of the 8200 cables. Both are called "AOR CC8200" but depending on the serial number of your receiver, you have to have the correct version. Only the very latest releases of the 8200 used a version that has a much smaller plug on the end that goes into the lower right side of the 8200.

Which AR8200 do you have? AR8200Mk2 or AR8200Mk3. If it is a AR8200Mk3, what is the serial number or post a picture of the plug on the right side that is just below the power plug.

UPDATE: I see in an earlier post, you said you have a AR8200Mk2 version, it uses the original "fat" plug version of the CC8200 programming cable. I will in a little while post a picture of the two versions of the cable.

The two versions are often referred to as CC8200A (the original) and CC8200B (the 2nd release) but the packaging generally doesn’t have anything but CC8200.

Here are two pictures of the version of the cable you are looking for. Occasionally one shows up on eBay for 75 to 100 dollars.

Here is a picture of the ends of the two cables, you are looking for the FAT end version of the cable which is MUCH easier to find.

One more thing to add... AOR switched to the "slim" version of programming cable sometime around 2012 and sometime after that started packaging the revised cable in a bag that called it "8200PC" but the part still had CC8200 stamped on the metal DB9 plug. That version won't work for your AR8200Mk2. So in your search for the cable, make the seller show you the end of the cable that plugs into the receiver.

Probably 75% of all Mk3 receivers use the FAT programming cable, only the last bunch made after 2012 use the THIN version and the majority of those were sold to the US government because the US government was the one that requested the changed interface. I will post a couple of pictures in a few minutes that show the port in the side of the receiver.

The second way to tell which you have is based on serial numbers. The new interface is ONLY on receivers with a serial number of 554251 or higher, everything else with serial numbers of 05xxxx and up to 554250 uses the FAT version of the cable.
