Does anyone have any recommendations on programming software for the 8200? Is there any freeware out there that would work? I am not sure how one would normally set up the radio (by software or manually programming it). I guess the scanner can only be used to program conventional frequencies, and I guess it does not scan with trunking systems.

What I would also like to know is how other users of this radio use it?

I have software from Butel on one of my computers, but rarely use that one, so I normally use ScanCat Gold to program my MK3. Software makes programming easy, and I find required to program text tags.

You can program in trunking frequenices and try to monitor them in a conventional mode. The MK3 can't trunk track.

It is super on Milair in the 225 to 400 MHz range. The speaker is outstanding and the unit is very sensitive.

On HF, a handheld is not a great receiver. But I when I go mobile I have used it on HF with so so results.

Quite right; only Uniden and GRE/RS have the digital trunking technology, at least for now.

You can find many other users of the 8200 series here; it's quite an active group...
