Thanks Steve,

I've been where you are now, at the forefront of new and not always properly working technology, so I have a definite appreciation for what you're dealing with and how you're sticking with it.

The concept is great; but this one is a definite long-term wait and see. AOR needs some beta testers in the US if they're going to continue with such productions. Their AR5000 is an absolute masterpiece. Others? Apparently not so much!

Thanks.

Hi KD4YGG,

The reason I asked is because the NXDN signaling for trunked 4800 voice is different that conventional 4800 voice. I wanted to be sure it received both conventional and trunked (IDAS and NexEdge) voice channels.

thanks,
Joe

NXDN4800 uses 6.25kHz and can be received

NXDN9600 uses 12.5kHz and can NOT be received

There may be plans for 12.5kHz/NXDN9600 support in a future firmware upgrade.

I've gotten reports from a couple of owners that it will decode NXDN4800 NexEdge trunked voice channels, IDAS trunked voice channels, and conventional 6.25kHz Nexedge.

It won't do NXDN9600 NexEdge trunked voice channels, nor conventional 12.5kHz NexEdge.

Thanks, that's no problem. There's only one NXDN9600 system in Philly (a casino). I'm moving to Orlando and I don't know of any there.

Once the AR-DV1's computer control protocol is released, A program such as Eric C's WinDSD which has trunking logic for NexEdge, IDAS, Con+, and Cap+ can be modified to control the radio while the radio receives the digital audio. Even the digital artifacts between voice transmissions on DMR can be dealt with by muting audio, if that's supported in the protocol. I hope that the protocol also supports isolating TDMA slots.

I'm looking forward to release of the computer control protocol. Looking forward to folks like Eric, Gommert, and others who are knowledgeable in this area to develop some software. If I had more time, or another life or two, I would love to get into software development for radios. But gladly (and I don't mean sadly), I am quite busy with many other things. But I love the interface between radios and computer technology, and I really admire those who can come up with some of the wonderful software now available.
Hopefully we will see some firmware update sometime next week.

Anyone have pictures of this beast, would really like to see one in the wild. Maybe a video of it in operation? Scanner master seems to be out of stock, they sold out that quick?

AOR AR-DV1 New Firmware

New Firmware Is Out

DMR motorboating appears to be fixed.

AR-DV1 firmware update:

AOR has uploaded revised firmware for the AR-DV1 receiver. While this update will correct issues that some customers experienced, it also adds more functionality to the AR-DV1.
AOR is committed to the continuous improvement of its products and will post firmware updates periodically to further extend the capabilities of this receiver.
The new firmware version: 1505G is now available for download from the AOR website.

This firmware will correct:
* Malfunctions with the backlit keys lighting up while the power switch is in the “off” position
* D-STAR signals overriding the selected mode for received data. The decode mode will now decode and display only the selected mode.
* Malfunctions with the receive frequency when CTCSS or DCS is selected during Search mode.
* Problems with pressing LOCK key or MONI key when frequency entry is made from the keypad
* Issues with the display data freezing when digital data is displayed while using the keypad or rotating the dial knob.
* Issues with the opening message displaying properly.
* Memory channel registration problems. Entering the memory tag followed by pressing DOWN key will now work properly.
* Voice squelch function stability
* SAL/SAL or USB/LSB operational issues
* D-CR code setting error
* Analog FM mode function
* Initial power-up cycle
* Problems with “motorboating” noise in DMR mode
* Problems adding receive mode, IF B/W, CTCSS/DCS in memory scan mode and program search mode.

New enhancements for the AR-DV1 available with this firmware include:
* Ability to open the squelch while in digital mode by pressing MONI key
* Ability to save the current receiver settings by pressing [F]+[VOL]
* Easier frequency entry during search bank setting by using the [.] (decimal) key for frequencies below 1MHz.
* In memory mode or program search mode, receiver options can be added.
* SD card FAT16 is now supported
* Remote ID can be added to last channel memory
* The AR-DV1 will send a message showing connection status during on/off process.
* Step frequency can now be set during search or scan mode
* The following PC commands are now supported: MD ZJ ZK SQ NQ LQ VQ ZP QP EX AG RF ST SH
DT BP LN LB LD KL PT ZI LC LM RX LT RT RE SB WI RN VR
AC RG IF LS NR OF OL OX SC SI DL FR
CI CN DI DS DC DJ DK
(A complete list of new functions will be posted soon.)

Should be interesting reading when the users start testing. I hope they will let us know ASAP how it's working.
I also remember reading about an over heating problem, how's that coming on?

I presume some of you saw my YouTube video of the AR-DV1 here in Los Angeles at
https://youtu.be/2O46DOwuF_g I rotated the video through the YouTube Editor but still cannot get it right. So some of you guys will probably say "Steve doesn't know up from down, left from right" and you're probably right. Now to get serious.
I downloaded the new firmware 1505G about 90 minutes ago and have been using it with the AR-DV1.
I don't really see any improvements in some of this issues I have described. If you look at my YouTube video with the 1505C firmware just before the update, you'll see a scan speed on analog of about 10-12 sec and much lower on digital. When the radio hits a digital signal, it really seems to stall, then picks up speed. However, this is only when I turn the squelch up to more than 80. Anything less, and the scanner stalls in search and scan. The new firmware doesn't do any better, and perhaps a bit worse. I am also not really impressed with the digital decode and voice quality, either analog or digital. Its OK, but only OK. I would expect much more from a receiver in this price range.
I told Taka and Jeff at Ham Station I would keep the radio for one more firmware update, but in the last 90 minutes, I can see there is nothing major that will help me. I hope many of you find this radio to be useful. Perhaps if software becomes available, and if I see a few great future reviews, I might be inclined to actually purchase the AR-DV1. But not at this point.
By the way, during the time I have been writing this post, the radio has gotten hotter, the scan function has stopped working, and the radio is making a loud clicking noise, and there is now no receive function, even on the weather stations. Turning the radio off and on stopped the clicking, and the receive function came back on.

I just spoke to Jeff at Ham Station. He said the radio he is using, although slow in searching/scanning, is not hot at all, and never has been. So it may very well be that I have been using a defective unit. Either way, I'm not going to get another one, but I caution others out there that my experience may be biased because of a problem with this particular unit, rather than the radio in general.

Rich,
It's the 12 V 800 Ma power supply that came with the radio. What kind of feedback have you been receiving Rich. Are you at liberty to say?

Pretty much the same things being heard here.

Did you check the power supply with a voltmeter? While it will likely read above 12 volts without a load, if you can check it with the radio on somehow and see if it is close to 12...

Here is the updated address for the YouTube video now in correct orientation.

Told Taka at AOR just now about radio heating up. However, this seems to be a problem that others are not really noticing. He asked me to bring the radio right over, he wants to exchange it for another one, and wants me to continue working with the updated firmware. Well, I'm probably one of the closest in proximity to AOR, so I'll be giving more updates later.

Thanks for the video. I will try to do the update tonight. I only have digital frequencies programmed in my radio. I have not programmed in any analog frequencies in yet. Glad AOR is listening to us. :)
