I agree, and it is an option that I had not even considered. Thanks grem.

This may be a little late, but the new ARRL Repeater Directory is going to have
a seperate classification for P25 capable repeaters like it does for ATV. If you
want to be listed in it be sure to contact your Repeater Coordinator today to be included.

Grem....The Florida Coordinator e-mailed your listed trustee (Wayne N4KWC) yesterday to query if you want to be listed with the 4 repeaters you have listed here.

nope, you just buy it, or take your radio to a shop that has it.

P25

I have two questions,

one if i have a p25 radio and i want to monitor a agency like my local vol fd how can i monitor them in p25 mode, listen only.

second question how many nac codes are there??

programming the radios would be good but motorola does not sell the software. is icom, kenwood and vertex like this with not selling programming software to customers. is it hard also with the other companies like motorola is????

If they are transmitting in P25, and were going with the assumption its not a trunked system. All you would do is program the channel and in the receive field, enter BLANK in the transmit field. It cant transmit on that mode with a BLANK transmit freq.

Nac codes I dont recall, and I am not going to try to guess.

Motorola does sell the software, to you, to me, and to anyone who will sign their agreement and fork over the cash. Part number RVN4184 does both the portables and the mobiles. Then of course you will need the rib and cables also. As previously mentioned these costs can be shared by a group so that they are not so overwhelming.

I know with the Motorola Astro Spectras/XTL, and XTS's you can put the P25 in Digital CSQ. So you don't need to know the NAC. I do this for some local stuff.

More.

I think it may be 4096 (12 bits), but I am not sure as there may be invalid codes.

The NAC code’s 12-bit field ranges from hexadecimal $000 to $FFF
and contains 4096 addresses (significantly more than the standard
CTCSS and DCS tones).

The following NAC codes have specific functions:
$293 specified as the default NAC value.
$F7E a receiver set for NAC $F7E will unsquelch on any incoming NAC.
$F7F a repeater receiver set for NAC $F7F will allow all incoming signals to be repeated with the NAC intact.

I believe that P25 is the ONLY digital voice protocal allowed in the Amature service. (Since it is an open standard)

Correct me if I am wrong.

What is DSTARS?

And as for the repeater type, would it not be the C4FM that would be hard to get an older transmitter to pass, not the IMBE vocoding?

whoa? there's something that N_Jay DOESN'T know???

:p

Whoa!! You mean "did not know" since that post was from 09-12-2004.

You must miss a whole lot of my posts.

There is plenty I don't know. It just does not become as big an issue because unlike some people here, if I don't know the answer, I don't both posting what I "think" and stating it as "fact".

In northern Idaho there are some hams using P25 on 146.490 MHz simplex. Also in Idaho the law is that any state or federal grant money used to purchase radio equipment can only be used to purchase P25 digital equipment. That means that any county that replaces their sponsored ARES or RACES repeaters will have to install P25 repeaters if they use any grant money.

Something that boggles my mind though is that P25 is a "narrowband" standard. For a radio to qualify as P25 it must pass both analog and digital on a 12.5 KHz channel. That's 2.5 KHz modulation in analog instead of the 5 KHz (20K0F3E) that is in use by amateur radio today. So as these repeaters, if they are setup as P25, will not work with "off the shelf" amateur equipment. They can be setup to work with 20K0F3E but only if you disable P25. I'm curious if the other systems in use on the ham bands have been modified to work around that somehow.

In the RSS you can tell a Motorola Quantar to pass wideband analog and narrowband P25 in a Mixed Mode configuration. I have 3 repeaters set up this way and work just fine
with off the shelf amateur gear.

I never knew there were APCO 25 repeaters or even radios. I'll have to get into this then. Is it like D-STAR where you can have like a broadband connection on your computer if you have it hooked to your radio?

What would I need to do to get an APCO 25 compliant ham radio (preferrably a mobile) up and running? From the sounds of it, I just buy an old police radio from somebody on eBay and mess around with it a little bit? Somebody help me out because this is really interesting stuff.

It's really a matter of obtaining a capable radio, programming the repeater split (or simplex channel, if you like) & digital parameters and you're P25ing it away.
