To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

APX8000 MDC Scan Issues

Hey guys,
I've noticed that when using a conventional scan, I seem to be missing MDC sporadically and I can't seem to find a reason why.
By missing MDC I mean when it is scanning and lands on a channel the MDC is missed completely or sometimes, I miss the audio of the MDC/DOS mute but will get the ID/Alias.
I have no more than 15 channels in the scan list at a time.
I have not had this happen for me on my XTS's

Anyone else notice this or could it be programming?

My 2 cents. It’s just one of the nuances of scanning any number of conventional analog channels. Your radio isn’t landed on the channel to pickup the entire MDC transmission.

My work radio is an APX8500 and I only scan 3-4 conventional channels when working and this will happen to me.

I have this issue in one county that I live near that uses Pre-MDC however the county next over uses Post-MDC and I get every single MDC decoded.

One of the risks with scanning is that you are not listening.

Things like Pre-MDC and 2 tone paging get missed because the radio is looking at other channels, and by the time it does realize there is traffic, it can miss the first tone of a page, or part of the MDC packet.

The way to fix it is to have the transmitting station send a long preamble on the MDC, or key up and wait before sending the two tone page.

Sometimes you can mess with the scan timing settings and get it to get -most- of the messages, which may explain why your XTS get them.

I've noticed hear clear or what ever it is called now can do this in a long scan list on a apx. If it's decoding the IDs, shouldn't be a issue. Does your radio have this enabled?

Yeah that seems to be the cause, it's just the way a conventional scan works. I would imagine the smaller the scan list the lesser amount of time lost
