• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

For the experts out there...

Bought the adapter cable, plugged it into the KLV 5000 and plugged the OEM APX program cable into the adapter. Changed the KVL to radio USB. The APX 8K was set up for software in the secure settings. KVL tried to load the key but timed out and displayed a Keyload Fail message.

Anyone who can offer some insight? Thanks in advance.

Does your radio have APX AES Software Encryption option?

QA06653 AES Software Encryption option only applies to some of the lower tier APX models like the APX 900, not to the 8000. The 8000 cannot be keyloaded using the USB method, you need the proper keyloading cable for that radio and it must be in Hardware Encryption mode to keyload with the KVL. There is no software AES with the 8000, only software ADP.

As GTR said the above is one of your issues. Anytime you use the KVL you have to have it setup as Hardware not Software.

If I'm wrong about QA06653 Software AES only being applicable to the APX 900, I'm happy to be corrected, however last I checked all mid-tier and high-tier APX models were hardware-only AES. No MACE = no AES in the rest of the APX lineup.

This is correct with all that I have seen with our APX's.
Only software based ENC is ADP/RC4.

Thanks, Marshall, as I thought. Odd that a legit 8000 would show software AES in the flash...hmm.

This is not true
APX8000 can be keyloaded with the standard programming cable, the only Algos are AES256, DES, and ADP. Using DLI (IP) mode of the free KFDtool and having the correct options turned on in the 8000 plus the correct settings in CPS will allow anyone to keyload via software.

8000 options needed respectively are:
  • QA06653 SW-AES
  • QA07949 DES Software Crypto
  • Q667 Advanced Digital Privacy
