    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value.     The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello,
I got an apx900 radio and I would like to use KVL 4000 for keyloading.
Which cable that I need to use it? It works at USB loading mode.
Should I buy this?

Ouch. Kevin is correct, of course.

"Software AES" as pertains to the APX series = no dedicated MACE, rather the encryption functions are handled by the radio's CPU through software functionality, no different than how software ADP works in any other MSI subscriber. Keyloading for AES, however, is always done via a KVL or equivalent hardware (exception being KFDTool software in DLI mode); there is nowhere within CPS to enter an AES key into the codeplug.
  • The APX 900 has two Secure Operation options: Disabled, or Software
  • The APX 900 Keyloading Source forces the selection to KVL when AES is selected; only ADP by itself allows for the selection of Encryption Key List (i.e. entering the ADP key directly into CPS).
Source: firsthand experience with AES in the APX 900, not gleaning "knowledge" by reading a spec sheet :whistle:

So the correct answer was the programming cable into KVL?

Yes, if you're putting an AES key in the radio you need a KVL and the proper cable.

Interesting thread. Took in a lot of interesting information on this topic. Just so I am clear, when using a KVL 5000 to program software encryption keys into an APX series radio the OEM motorola programming cable gets plugged into the side port of the KVL? Since the programming cable is a standard USB and the KVL is a micro USB is there a recommended adapter that will suffice?

Thanks in advance for any info.
