I live in the Dayton Ohio area and my 8200 isn't picking almost any traffic on the AM band. I use to lisiten alot to the local air freq's and now can't pick up a thing? Could my radio be faulty?

I have a MKII. I dont currently have an external antenna, although I did for a while and it helped reception greatly. I didn't seem to be getting any AM reception at all recently which made me think it was a more serious issue. But I just got a cheap external antenna from radio shack and did pick up a single transmission on civ air band so maybe it just an antenna thing after all.

Thanks for your reply :)

Do you have the radio set to us Ethe internal or external antenna?
My 8200 is pretty good at hearing the AM broadcast band. It is no DX champion but it does an adequate job.

Now if you set the radio to use the internal antenna...It must be mounted as well....If you have a balcony rail or fence take the 8200 and place it close to the rail or fence and you should see a dramatic increase in reception.
AOR Forever!! I do love all of my AOR radios.
There are better radios for monitoring the am brodcast band.

i don't think there is a better radio than AOR 8200 for civilian and military air. It does need an antenna, and my MKIII came with a collapsable antenna that is exccellent.

This is actually correct. The 8200 has an external AM Band antenna. It clicks into place on the top of the radio. Is ours missing?
This little antenna works pretty well for me here in Los Angeles.

What we are talking about here is the AM brodcast band 530kc-1800kc or somthing like that.
We aren't talking about Mil Air.

Sorry about the confusion

My original problem was my 8200 seems no longer to be reciveing anything AM. When I said even with external antenna I meant an antenna on the roof of my house. But forgetting my issues with the 8200 as I'm close to Wright-Pat AFB and Dayton international I've been wondering for a while if there is a scanner that would be more suited to reciveing airband as I'm getting bored with just monitoring local EMS and Police Freq's.

Your radio will do great on the airbands.
I am sure the frequencies are in the database of this group.
You will hear plenty.

Can I assume that sensitivity is ok when receiving FM? Can you hear distant weather and distant cities and such? I had a problem with my old 8200 where the solder connection from the center pin of the BNC broke away from the pc board. I removed and tightened the connector and re-soldered it and it has been ok ever since.

If the problem is no AM reception such as broadcast, vhf air or uhf air, then that is a different problem entirely and will probably require a vacation at AOR service to fix.
