The idea is you could put one CC in at then travel the state, it works and it works well. This is exactly how P25 radios work.

Agreed - if programmed to do that -- using specific system/site values or site value wildcards coupled with Full Spectrum Scan (FSS).

Without both FSS or (accurate) specifics, you'll just get "Out Of Range".

Brand spanking new here, so please forgive any unintended transgressions. I am contemplating ordering a Unication G5 (VHF/800) Phase II radio (I may use on the east coast from time-to-time, hence Phase II). It appears it will work for my Wis VHF system and if I am reading this correctly, the Minnesota ARMER system. I would like to monitor some of WashCo, Minn State Patrol (East & West Metro), and Mpls Police & Fire. Am I asking too much, or can I program these in and listen to perhaps MSP West Metro and Mpls PD/FD at the same time? And then "turn a knob" and monitor East Metro and WashCo? I have only seen the radio advertised and have not played with one yet. I also need it to be paged on our county VHF system. It is a pricy radio and I want to make sure I am not buying an expensive paper weight. Any help? Thank you.

Yes it will work just fine for that. Here is what it will not do.

It will not listen to more then one system at a time, ie ARMER and WISCOM and Conventional VHF. It is one at a time. You can turn the knob and a have a new system but not on the same selection.

It can also only listen to one trunking site at a time, you can limit it to certain site or you can let it choose the best site basses on RSSI as you move around.

Without the base amplifier for the pager you can't put an external antenna to pick up distant sites.

However it works great on ARMER, WISCOM and Analog systems. I have mine set up with several different files for different parts of the country. Mostly Minnesota and Wisconsin.

If you want something that can do it all at once, and have multiple list going at the same time you want a scanner. If don't mind being more selective and want a great receiver, choose the G5.

Not trying to discourage you or confuse you, the G5 is a great option just want to let you know the limitations.

Hope this helps

If we're now comparing Unication to scanners:

Full spectrum scan

Here are the screen shots that did not attach the first time.
I wanted to double check on the frequency step used for the spectrum scan attachment shown previously on post #13. Should the step size be 6250hz (for 6.25 kHz spacing) instead of 625hz or am I missing something?

Should the frequency scan also start at 851.0625 instead of 851.00625?

Yeah - I saw that too -- the default is 12500 - I usually use 6250

For performance reasons, you probably want to set the range based on what looks like "normal" for the system you are working with - a small as possible such that is covers the ranges in use. Of course, if you are not sure, just set it to the limits for the band you are configuring. Per the user guide:

The definitions for frequency range for different bands are:
1. VHF: 136 - 174MHz
2. UHF A: 330 - 400MHz
3. UHF B: 380 - 430MHz
4. UHF C: 400 - 470MHz
5. UHF D: 450 - 512MHz
6. 700/800: 763 - 776MHz and 851 - 870MHz

For 7/800 - there is no need to program both 700 and 800 ranges unless you know they system in question is using 700, 800 or both (or don't know for sure).

You are correct, Finnesotan. Looks like I missed a Zero when I entered that. The band scan hasn't been too slow but that would defiantly speed it up.

The bands can starts are based off the system IDEN, this is the split needed to get any site in the system. That is why it is like that, they system has planned 700.

Remember we are trying to program the pager for ARMER, not all the other systems in the country so let’s focus on how ARMER works.

Yes, it does help and “Thank you.” That will work for me. Now I just need to work some more on figuring out the intricacies of the ARMER system. The only thing on WISCOM I would probably entertain is the Wisconsin State Patrol.
