• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Been having this problem while trying to program a talk group that it won’t let me turn off transmiting. Anyone know why?

Literally the top sticky note in this subforum. READ IT.

Motorola doesn't really have a true RX ONLY functionality in trunked operation. With extremely few exceptions.
There are very specialized ways of getting around this but they require high skill levels and bending a few laws....to the breaking point.

Do it wrong and you'll get an inhibited radio, possibly legal trouble too.

Forget it. Just get a scanner. Stay out of trouble that way.

Looks like you're trying to program a TRS, if so get a scanner. Now retired, but in the day I would inhibit an unauthorized radio in a heartbeat. I had a great working relationship with my VFD chiefs, and they would tell their probies that thought about buying Mother M to try to get on the TRS that if the radio shop saw their radio pop up, it would be a door stop in a few minutes. I had an open-door policy for volunteers that wanted to monitor our system without getting in trouble. We would steer them in the correct direction to be able to monitor, but not show up on Gen Watch.

A foolproof way is to program the conventional frequencies for the tower that covers your area. No worries about the radio po po or ended up with a paperweight

He asked a simple question on how to make a talkgroup receive only and basically the answer is "You can't. Don't even try. You aren't expert enough to pull that off." Without being so insulting.

The answer is NO. Got it?

How do you get free money from a bank? You rob it at gunpoint. Oh yeah....that's illegal and dangerous and can result in big trouble for you.

Same deal in principle.

If it was so f-ing easy to use a Motorola radio as a trunking SCANNER, it wouldn't be such a common problem with lots of people asking how to make the radio do what it CLEARLY was not MEANT to do!

We come out due to the fact that the OP may not know
1 Their radio could get bricked.
2 Their radio may interfere with the system and interrupt emergency communications
3 Their radio interference may end up costing them a trip to court
4 They have no idea what they are doing or how to do it.
5 We the NAS Police as you call us are either the ones that put our life on the line or are paid to protect the ones that put their lives on the line
6 If you are going to attempt this direction you need to know all the risk WAS YOUR MOTHER WRONG TELLING YOU WHAT LAWS NOT TO BREAK?

So, technically, he never said anything about NAS. He could be a legitimate system user, with a valid ID, wanting to add a talkgroup to monitor that he is not authorised to transmit on. Everyone immediately assumed, then went crazy anti-NAS on him.

I doubt that's the case, because in the screenshot, his ID is 0001, but everyone just assumed what he was trying to do without asking a few simple questions before jumping down his throat about NAS.

No AUTHORIZED system user should be coming HERE for information on how to program his radio. If he's authorized, the designated radio shop that supports the agency will handle it. Guaranteed. In fact, if he is authorized, he's almost certainly NOT authorized to have it programmed by anybody BUT the authorized radio shop. In most departments that's expressly prohibited and is a firing offense.

That his shown ID is 0001 is even MORE evidence that he's NOT authorized. That ID is almost NEVER issued to a subscriber radio.

Once again, you're assuming. How about you answer his question if you know the answer or end your rant and let someone provide a legitimate answer.

OP has 1 post here, how about we don't give a bad taste in his mouth which would make him not want to come back to this site for ANY help.

I have it and the other "usual suspects" of bogus IDs active in Provisioning Manager and added in RCM to zap lists to get the usual Ebay radio cloner/whackers with no effort, then wait for the "my radio turns on then off" threads to appear.

I understand all of that, my point is, like 6 different people jumped down this guy's throat all off of assumptions. Yes, the ID 0001 is a red flag, but without more information about what he is trying to do, it's crazy to me that everyone just goes wild.

That works great for a small system where’s there’s 1conversation going on at a time. But for a large county system, that just won’t work.

Normal people with authorized radios on a trunked system with ID of 1 typically don't come to a hobbyist website to find out why they cannot make their radio not transmit. This has happened here often enough the assumption is more than likely correct. TG/AG Disabled is commonly confused with the thought to stop ALL transmissions as if it were true rx only not realizing that it will still affiliate.

Things just aren't the way they were in 1990. Security, encryption, post-911 paranoia, HAVING a Department of Homeland Security, the situation is just not at all the same from a social or legal perspective. Fumbling around and using your MTSX2000 to listen to your local trunked PD system then was not going to be cause for alarm, paranoia, and a disproportionately heavy-handed response from law enforcement and the media, but the modern equivalent of such an adventure could very easily snowball into a federal case....LITERALLY....in the quasi-apocalypic world of 2024.

Once I was free and open with my assistance in helping someone to safely scan a TRS. Now I can not in good conscience offer any such advice other than "DON'T!" for reasons of both YOUR protection AND MINE. At least use the safer methods known to work. Buy a Unication, it's perfect for the job. If not, go with Harris, which makes safe monitoring much easier and it's actually designed to do it. The Moto method remains problematic. I know of only one actual officially supported configuration in which a Moto radio becomes a truly "safe" scanning radio, and the Dual Apx "Hot Red Receiver" mobile radio system is pretty monstrously expensive!

I will, however, offer ONE tidbit of information that has only recently come to my attention. And it HELPS to add another layer of protection and safety to the "hidden talkgroups" scanning method I went public with so many years ago.

The radio only validates the trunking key you used to program system data WHEN THE RADIO TRANSMITS. Properly programmed, it will NEVER transmit, thus the key you used won't be checked against the system.

I leave it to you to analyze that statement.

Mods/staff: Delete/edit this if you feel it appropriate to do so. I trust your judgement.

The analysis is complete: your statement is utter nonsense. Again. Where do you come up with this stuff, seriously?

The system key is used ONLY by CPS to allow for the programming of the trunked system matching the system key. The key NEVER gets programmed into the codeplug/radio, it exists in CPS ONLY.

Please, in all sincerity, just stop posting on this topic. Your info is either grossly outdated or you simply don't have the grasp of so-called "Non-Affiliate Scan" that you believe you do.

So please delete it. Rather than go into slap-a-b-mode over it, just delete it since I can't.
I misremembered what I'd learned. Somehow I kind of had the right idea in my head but I didn't write it out at all correctly.

Yeah, I know, the system key is not programmed into the radio. It's in CPS only. So why'd I write it so wrong? If I knew that I'd feel a bit smarter right now. But I don't.

I'm not a moderator, I can't delete posts, nor would I. You're a big boy, you've been a member here for 22 years. You know that the mods don't delete posts unless there is a really good reason to. The fact that you continually post misinformation is not an RR problem, it's a you problem.

I believe I've said this before, but it bears repeating: You don't have to chime in on everything. It's okay to sit on the sidelines and not throw your two cents into literally every "NAS" thread on this website. Really, you'll be fine, try it and see for yourself! :)
