It is not like other computer time setting programs that you have to have running all the time.:)

If you want software that will query the server in Boulder Co at set your PC clock you can download a small program called Nistime-32bit from here:

http://tf.nist.gov/service/its.htm

It is a small program that you can put in your documents folder and run it when you want to.

If you're running WinXP, you don't need any special software to sync your PC's clock. Double-click on the clock in the task bar, click on "internet time" and from there you can sync with NIST.

OK, I'll humble myself and ask.....
From reading here and going to the website it looks like most scanners are not capable of picking up these signals, correct?

There are a few like the BR-330T but you'll need a shortwave receiver to pick them up. You're really not missing a whole lot if you have internet access to sync your clocks. All it is is a tock-tock sound for the seconds and at about 10 seconds before the minute change, a voice comes on and says "At the tone, (x) Hours, (X) minutes, Coordinated Universal Time"..BEEP!

Lather, rinse, repeat.

At the bottom of the hour, they have solar cycle reports and stuff.

I use them for quick propigation estimates for my HF work.

Things haven't changed much, except for the bottom of the hour info sounds the same as it did when I scanned SW 35 years ago (and lost interest).

Hi all,

There's lots more to the WWV and WWVH signals than time ticks and a voice announcement! They're also RF and audio standards plus they also transmit digital information. The 60KHz WWVB signal is used to syncronize those "atomic" clocks like the one hanging on my wall since being a ground wave signal it can be received at any time just about anywhere in North America.

NisTime is not only faster but more accurate than the date/time set in WinXP even if it uses one of the NIST servers. NisTime is more versitile too since it gives you a whole selection of servers but the purpose is accuracy, using the closest one avoids undue transmission delays inherent in the Windoze program that takes MANY times longer to update the system clock. OK, call me a nit picker but frankly I got tired of the errors inherent in the Win proggie that has been up to 15 hours off.

You're welcome Olia, now get yourself a shortwave receiver and find out what you've been missing, HAMS! Oh, if you don't have an atomic clock, get an Atomic Rooster and listen to Sonic Attack, you'll be pleasantly surprised if not deaf afterward. (;->)

I used to run Tardis to sync with NIST. I now use XP's built-in synchronization. I've not seen any errors greater than 1/2 second, when compared to my GPS or shortwave receiver. Given the time inaccuracies of everything else on the 'net, 1/2 second is just fine for my PCs.
EDIT: same (in)accuracy when compared to my 60kHz "auto-setting" clock. All but the PC agree with each other, and the PC is, at most, 1/2 second off.

used to have a shortwave while in college and it just stopped working..ecept for the FM side of it. never really got back into it. at this point it is on the list of things i would like to have again. but until then, the scanner is good enough.
